Hello, My guinea pig over the last few days has been acting strange, 1st day he drank lots of water like half his water bottle and just sat in the corner of his cage daydreaming and didn't really touch much food, 2nd day he barely touches his food, he has had little nibbles and only drinks a little water and then just sits in corner of his cage and daydreams.

He is a male guinea pig and has always been small and is 1 year old and weighs 725g, could he be diabetes or something else, any help would be amazing.

Thanks in advance.

Please see a vet asap. Lack of appetite and lethargy is concerning and requires a hands on vet check.

Please step in and syringe feed him straight away. Also ensure you weigh him every day (at the same time each day) so you can more closely monitor food (hay and syringe feed) intake.. Your daily weight checks will be your guide as to how much syringe feed you need to give him in each 24 hour period.

How Soon Should My Guinea Pig See A Vet? - A Quick Guide

Do you have a vet you frequent? Can’t hurt to make an appointment and see if any underlying issues surface.

Hello, Yeah he has a friend in a cage next to him and they can see each other but they had a fight a few months ago, so had to put them in different cages, I will hand feed him now, No he is not bloated, Could he be diabetic?

Lethargy and not eating can be a symptom of any illness. There is no way for us to know if he is diabetic.
Please do have him seen by a vet and step in with syringe feeding and daily weight checks

My 3yo piggy Daisy had similar symptoms. She drank a lot of water for about 2 weeks (I was refilling water bottles all the time) and seemed to slow down a little, eating just a bit more slowly and acting a bit strange. One morning she refused to eat (and swallow) so I rushed her to my exotics vet. She passed away suddenly while at the vet from acute leukaemia. After she passed away I could see the large amount of water she had been drinking. So as recommended by everyone above, please do take your piggy to a good piggy vet and let’s hope for a good outcome.

Any update on him?
Thanks for all the help guy, Our guinea pig is well again, Took to vets and there said nothing is wrong with him he just stress and not taking enough Vitamins C, even though he has unlimited hay, Cup full of veg and pellets everyday, so they recommend me to give him ProC Probiotic through a syringe with warm water, So I did yesterday and this morning he is happy again and eatting again and bouncing around, playing with his guinea pig friend again it there play pen 🐹😊🤗

I’m glad your piggy is well again.

If your piggy is eating a good variety of veg, hay and pellets, then they will be getting enough vitamin c. Scurvy is not a common issue

Pro c is a probiotic which provides digestive support. It contains vitamin c. it’s fine to give to help settle upset tummies.
What you don’t want to do is routinely overdo vitamin c intake via supplements when piggy is otherwise getting a good balanced diet. Routinely giving excess vitamin c at best is a waste as excess vit c is simply excreted in the urine and at worst it can cause scurvy symptoms. Their bodies become used to abnormally high levels and then react with scurvy symptoms if the level drops, even if the levels would be considered otherwise normal.

Are you routinely weighing your guinea pigs?
