My piggy has recently started loudly squeeking around midnight. She usally chews on her cage bars before I go to bed and I usally give her a veggie to calm her down. Last night she woke me up because of the squeeking. :hb: I decided to take her out of her cage to calm her down (and so I could get some sleep  ) Well, when I went to pick her up, she took a lunge at my wrist. She held on to my wrist, and almost took a nasty chunk out. :td: So, at 11:30 at night I'm cleaning up my arm and thinking how I'd like to turn my piggie into bacon bits. Anyway, :btt: I'm not sure what's going on but if she keeps biting me and keeping me up, I'll have to get rid of her. :bye: I don't want to, but i'm not going to let her keep tbiting me like that. HELP! :ple:

Thanks!

Is she a solo piggie?

If so a friend would be the best option but also there are some hints so tricks to distract her

A guinea pig size toy would keep her company as well as a mirror so she can look at herself. Also you can put something on the bars to stop biting. Also does she have some good hidies? If she starts again with biting the bars get a cosy sack round her into that and that'll stop her being able to bite you. Plus it'll make her feel more comfortable as well.

@sport_billy <-- he has a biter and might be able to help out on advise.

Don't be put off by her biting... I had a biter and I've been bitten by one of my current piggies but I think she was just interested in what my hand is.

Thanks! She is a solo piggie. I had a cardboard box in her cage but she hits bells that are hanging in the cage. She's a musical piggie :) I'll try the things you said. Although, I can't get another piggie! (parents :P) Getting rid of her is a last resort.

As long as she has things to distract her she'll be just fine :)
Is she quite young? If so she'll most likely grow out of biting but she might not like being handled.

Bar biting tends to be out of boredom mostly so keep her mentally simulated and you shouldn't have any problems. Try bags stuffed with hay and toilet roll tubes stuffed with hay. Simple and cheap. The simplest things tend to be the most affective

She's obviously learned that can get attention from you with her behaviour. It is not at all rare in single and often bored piggies.

Please be aware that sows that have been alone for a long time can often be rather wary of other piggies as they have no ideal how to deal with them, so it is not quite as straight forward as getting another sow and putting them together! We can give you tips if you wish to consider going down this route.

i hate the term 'get rid'.

she could be lonely and bored like others have said. lone piggies are more nervous i think. maybe try and figure out her behaviour and ways you can help her. they aren't just disposable when they don't behave exactly how you want them to. sounds like she just wanted some attention from you. :(

hope you can figure something out.

my boys like bar chewing during the night but instead of squeeking they tear up and down full speed expelling energy and crashing around i found leaving a lamp on for them or a low night light calmed them down, mine have become nippers nit quite biters but still annoying i am trying to teach them it gets them no where

Hi, it could be many things as well as boredom. I would get her a companion and see how that goes.
Good luck :)

Before I got my second piggy, my Hallie was alone and would chew on the cage bars and even rip holes in her fleece bedding. Often times she was just really skittish. I found that putting on quiet classical music helped calm her down a lot and then I got her a friend and she's completely grown out of it. Best of luck! Please don't give up hope, I'm sure its just phase or agitation.

Dudley chews the bars when he want attention, food or to come out, we've attached clear perspex around the bottom now so he cant do it as used to drive me insane, bless him, the first few days he couldn't work out why he could get to the bars so that could be an option for you

Thanks for all the help! I don't really want to give her back to the lady I got her from, but she has bitten me several times very bad. She used to be a sweet piggie and I want to try and help her. Giving her back is the last thing I want to do. Even thinking about it makes me want to cry.

Please for the sake of everyone's hearts don't give her back, maybe try taking her to a rescue or professional and ask them for tips. :)

could she be ill? sometimes that can make them grumpy and make them bite because they don't want to be touched. a skin condition possibly? maybe a vet could give her a check over to make sure she is ok?

Ditto from me too, mites can make them very irritable, mine take a chunk out of my arm when they have mites and I touch them, mange mites can make them very sensitive and are not visible to the naked eye.

my guinea pig smudge does that he chews the bars like mad and he destroyed the side of the bathroom door any tips (bless him)

I haven't had any problems like this, however one of my females every so often will come into heat and she can get quite feisty so it may be that she is coming into heat?
