Hi so my guinea pig has just had two back to back pregnancies. She had three the first time and two the second. She’s with all three girls from the pregnancies and has been fine. They’re 6 weeks old the two babies from the second and she’s weaned them. Now I don’t know if this is possible but it’s like she’s got post baby blues or something. She is fine fitness wise, eating, drinking and the occasional run and a popcorn but she’s staying away from the other pigs and is sleeping loads. Don’t get me wrong she’s always been lazy but she’s rumbling at the pigs and nips them to keep them away. Just wondering if she’d be better off on her own or does she just need time to recover 🤷🏻‍♀️ thanks in advance ☺️🐹

How did you come to have back to back pregnancies?

So there are four pigs in the cage - her and three young sows - is that correct?

How big is the cage?
Are there multiple resources in the cage?
Do all hides have two exits?

Rumbling and nipping are all gestures of power and dominance. The six week old sows will be having their first seasons so it’s possible tensions will be a bit higher than normal and she is asserting her dominance by nipping and rumbling at them.
It doesn’t sound like separation is needed at all. From what you’ve said there aren’t any signs of a failed bond.

Hi thanks for your reply. The cage is 5x2 at the moment. They have 4 hides and yep there are 4 in total

Four sows really need a 6x2 c&c on a single level (lofts or upper levels do not count and don’t increase the floor space) to have enough space.

Keep an eye but it doesn’t sound concerning from what you’ve have said.

Ok thanks. As soon as Xmas is out of the way I’ll be getting them an upgrade. 4 was never intended it was just a pets at home mishap 🙈

Oh dear, I’m sorry to hear that
Sorry just noticed you asked about the back to back pregnancies. Bobble had a friend that died just over two years old and I waited a month or two then bought another friend from pets at home for it to turn out to be male. I didn’t realise she was pregnant and separated the day after I found the babies once I had a spare cage but she was already pregnant. Rehomed the boys with my friend who keeps pigs. Do you think she could have something illness going on or does it all sound normal? Sorry for all the questions. I suppose she’s just been so busy and hungry the last three or four months it seems out of character her to be staying in her hide etc :-(

If you are worried about her potentially being unwell then our advice would be to switch to daily weight checks so you can more closely monitor intake. If you notice weight loss of 50g or more or she is lethargic, not being herself etc then step in with syringe feeding and see a vet
