Hi, i’ve recently adopted a guinea pig and the owners gave me grooming wipes and small animal shampoo for him and i am hesitant to use them because i’ve read that they are not supposed to be bathed more than a few times a year so i’m unclear as to what i’m supposed to do

Welcome to the forum

A guinea pig shouldn't really need bathing unless they get particularly messy.
Long haired piggies do tend to get wet bums and matted fur unless groomed regularly.
I have a long haired girl who gets her fur combed through weekly and any matted fur trimmed.
She's had one bum bath since I got her last July and is probably going to need another one soon.

Is your new boy long or short haired?

Is he alone as guinea pigs are social animals and really need the companionship of another piggy.

Have a look through the forum information threads - there's a wealth of helpful information for new owners regarding care of these delightful creatures.

Unless they get absolutely filthy, it's really not necessary to do full baths. Some pigs, especially those with longer fur, can get wet/matted at the back and may need a wash and to have their fur trimmed to prevent tangles and dampness. I wouldn't be in a rush to bathe a new pig, though... they are stressed enough as they are.

I have a long haired piggy named Finn and I give him bum baths every three months or so. He is an indoor piggy so he will smell if I don't take care of his long hair by trimming his hair and giving him bum baths. He does complain during nail cutting and bath time. I have a special bond with him due to spending a lot of grooming time with him.

The Ever Beautiful Betsy is in desperate need of a bum bath but where she is an outside piggy it's going to have to wait for a few more weeks until it's warmer outside. She is the only one I ever give a bum bath as she has long hair. The other 4 have never had a bath except for when they had mites. They are 3 years old now.
