Hi everybody,
Could you please tell me how much gripe water can i give to my piggy in a day?
And how much per hour?
He weighs around 1100 gr.
I've tried to research it on the Internet but I got lots of different and confusing replies.

I just want to know the correct dose!

Many thanks! :)

My gripe water suggest to give a tablespoon or two to babies. so I usually do 5ml or less for guinea pigs every couple of hours or so

Please don’t give it unless you’ve spoken to a vet first. There may be prescribed medications that are necessary first and foremost. We never advocate home treatments on this forum.

:agr: with @Piggies&buns

Severe bloat is not something that can be cured with a little gripe water. Please see a vet over any recurring bloating issues and do not home treat on spec. It is false economy.

He has mild bloat.
Yesterday night I noticed he was very gassy and not eating much hay but he was mostly eating the cardboard box in his cage.
His poops were tiny and slim.
Same thing this morning.
It's the weekend so the vet won't be open till Monday.
I'm syringing him water with Pro-C and giving him Fibreplex.
I'm not feeding him any veggie.
I gave him 0.5ml of Gripe Water yesterday night together with Metacam as he seemed sore around his belly.
Today I didn't give Metacam though but
I made him move around and he eated some hay and made some poops, better shaped but still not ok.
I gave him another 0.5ml of Gripe Water, Fibreplex and Pro-C.

Is there anything else I can do till Monday?

Thank you for your help.

5 ml means 5 of the little 1ml syringes, is that right?
So you give 5 of them every 2 hours?
It seems a very high dose....maybe I understood wrong!

Hi!

Slim poos mean that the bloat or potential GI stasis (when the gut has stopped working fully or partially) is bad enough to impact massively on the foot intake for more than just one day, so this is NOT a mild bloat! Keep in mind that you cannot control the hay intake just by eye - and it makes about 80% of what a guinea pig eats in a day.

Please see a vet as an emergency (the UK still has round the clock emergency vet cover). Gripe water is not strong enough to sort this on its own.
You will have to also step in with syringe feeding every two hours in the day asap to help keep the gut and your piggy going.
This is more serious than you are thinking!

Eating cardboard means that the gut microbiome is very much out of balance. The best thing in this case is free - 'poo soup' made by soaking just dropped healthy poos from a companion in a little water and then syringing the water directly so you are transferring live gut biome. It is more effective than probiotics because it contains exactly the right stuff as long as it is made properly.

Pro c and fibreplex are the same thing - a probiotic - it’ll help to settle a tummy.
A piggy who isn’t eating enough hay for himself needs syringe feeding a recovery food such as critical care or mushed up pellets.
A vet absolutely will be open - all uk vets have to provide out of hours emergency care. He needs a vet, not home treatments

Thanks for your replies.
I'm giving my piggy Critical Care and mashed pellets.
I'm also giving probiotics and water.
He's munching on his hay and pellets and begs for veggies but I'm not giving them to him now.
He's active and goes around when I give him floor time.
I'm checking his weight daily too.
His poops have improved and I'll continue keeping an eye and doing all the best for him.
