Hello, I got a pair of piggies back in 2019. Just yesterday one of the pair has passed away. It was very traumatic for me and was completely unexpected. She showed no signs of any illness and was only 4 years old.

I'm not really sure what to do with my other piggie. She's also 4 and was normally the shy one. Of course it's only been a day and I'm still processing the loss myself, but I know guinea pigs need companions. However, I'm not able to get another pig, putting me at a loss for what to do. I know giving her up to someone with a bigger heard is an option but I'm not sure she would get along with other pigs. I know it's also selfish but I don't want to lose my last piggie either. But I'm still in school and I know I won't be able to give her the attention a single guinea pig needs

She's been hiding and sleeping all day, but she is still eating and drinking. I don't want her to live the rest of her life alone and I really just need help with what to do now.

Hi and welcome

BIG HUGS

I am very sorry for your loss. Please be kind to yourself as well as with your remaining piggy.

You my find the guides in the access link below helpful to make more sense of the dying process, your emotions and what you can do for a bereaved companion in the immediate and longer term. As long is the companion is eating and drinking, they will hold for a few weeks so you can hopefully get through the worst of the shock and grief and have time to think through your various options.
Death, Dying, Terminal Illness; Human Grieving and Bereaved Companions: Information and Support for Owners and Their Children

I m sorry if I am a bit short but I have just had to bury my own Llelo this morning after he needed emergency euthanasia on Monday. The guides will take you through all aspects in practical detail. I have done my best to make them sensitive but precise enough in the areas that other information sources tend to just skim over.
