My guinea pigs are terrified of being in their pen on the lawn. I was thinking of putting grass trays in their cage then swapping them out when they were finished. Could this work or do you have any other suggestions for grass?

Having a cover over their pen on the lawn can help them feel more secure.
Having a tray of grass indoors is fine but you may well find that, depending on its size, within minutes it’s gone!

If you can add your location to your profile, that would be helpful as it can help us tailor our advice specific to your location.

I can’t put a roof on their pen since it’s home made so a cover wouldn’t fit. The trays would be around the size of the top of their cage. And sorry but I don’t feel comfortable sharing my location. This website is so helpful!

Ok - just throwing blanket over can be enough, even over part of it, to give them some feeling of security. I use an old pair of curtains over my lawn run. My two boys decimate my lawn in their large outdoor run within about an hour! So an area of the size of the cage probably wouldn’t last long at all! It is still a nice idea to do it though. Make sure any grass is introduced into their diet slowly though if they aren’t used to it.

It only needs to be a general location or just your country. Our advice otherwise will be purely uk based which may not appropriate for all situations. The decision is obviously yours though.

Also give them some hides when they’re outside. A box or stool does the job.

I have the pigs in my bedroom so I take them outside in a old (washed) cat crate. Would that work? Also is it ok for them to go outside on wet grass? I can’t find anything about that

Yes taking them out in a crate is a good idea.
No they can’t go out if the grass is wet or if the outside temperature is below 15 degrees.
