Hi everyone!

It's a sunny day here but not too hot so Buttercup and Daisy are enjoying the garden in their hutch and run combo - they are secure in it, netting fitted over the top and the run securely fastened to the hutch (pic at the end of this post). They've been out for a few hours here and there in the last few weeks but today for the first time the neighbours cat has noticed their existence......

With the mesh of the hutch being small there is no way a cat could get at them in there, but the run has wider spacing (not big enough for a piggy to squeeze through bit big enough for a cat paw). They have a Pigloo and another house, and a few other bolt holes so they can retreat into them if they felt threatened, or go back into the safety of the hutch, and so far they have seen the cat and weren't remotely bothered - the cat was a little excited and stalked around them a bit but didn't make any moves to get at them.

I can't stay out in the garden with them all day (I wish!) but I am checking on them every few mins and have had to evict the cat a few times. I'm quite new to piggy ownership and just wanted to check that I'm doing the right thing! I know my neighbours who own the cat, and they also have a grand total of 4 rabbits and 5 guinea pigs who all live permanently outside on grass runs so as far as I know guinea pigs are not a complete novelty as far as the cat is concerned!

In the meantime, the guineas are loving their grass time! How does everyone else manage cats during outdoor time? Xximage.webp

I don't think you need to worry, especially if the cat is used to small furries!

My guinea pigs have to put up with the cat lying and the chickens perching on top of their run! They don't seem to mind!

My cat lies on top of our run. It's a wooden one with a hinged galvanised mesh top. My concern with your kind if run is that the cat would jump on top and the mesh would simply tear, collapse or detach, allowing the cat inside.

I too love your pink hutch!

Don't have a cat but my small pooch loves to be with the piggies & does Olympic high jumps to get in with them. As I only had a net cover for my outdoor run, poochie had jumped on top & ripped the net cover. Their indoor cage has a wire top but as poochie jumps on top trying to get in I'm afraid of her hurting her legs in the wires, so it is now on a table she can't reach. So, a wire top for the outdoor run is no good for me. I've gotten a piece of plywood cut to size & I put it on the outdoor run. It is light so easy to take on & off & I just store it upright against a wall in the garage. This keeps the birds out (the magpies here are terribly interested in the piggies for some reason) & we also have snakes to worry about. But the best thing is poochie can jump on top without hurting her legs or falling in.
