I have a female guinea pig with grainy pee. I was having some lap time and she peed on me -sigh- and I realized it was grainy. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Do I need to take her to the vet?DC0A48AF-37F5-49B9-A36C-6D7227FC3ED7.webp

As a UK based forum, you posted in the middle of our night time, so you do need to be patient for a reply from the health team.

It would be best for you to see a vet so checks of her bladder can be carried out.

It would also be wise for you to review her diet. This kind of gritty pee or white patches can be indicative of a diet a bit too high in calcium. A lot of calcium is brought into the diet by pellets and drinking water. Ensure you feed a low calcium pellet (one which does not contain alfalfa and ideally which one is grain free), and ensure water is filtered. You should also aim to keep low calcium veg intake low - only feed high calcium veg such as parsley, spinach and kale, once per week only. Diet changes will take several weeks to have an effect going forward though.

Thank you! They only get a tablespoon of pellets and the water is filtered but she’s had parsley everyday as I didn’t realize that was high in calcium. I figured it was the middle of the night, but there was other activity on the forum so I wasn’t sure. Thank you so much, I’ve just never had grainy calcium pee just white milky. I really appreciate this!

Hey you,

Recently happened to my girls, I will post my thread here (hope that is okay) as I don't have too much time right now >.<.

A vet trip would be recommended, my vet and I made sure no stones had formed before anything. My girls were also put on painkillers since having grainy wee can be rather painful.
