Is it 'typical' behaviour of a guinea pig to bite chunks of hair from another and eat it?

This happened with a couple of female gpigs I had a while back before they died - Candy always pulled out the hair of Biscuit, making her squeal. I ended up separating them. I'm curious now whether this is something that usually happens particularly after a period of time where they seemed happy together. What could cause this... any ideas?

Baby Tulip is doing this to my older girls, it's called barbering and I think is a boredom related thing. My older girls generally tell Tulip to naff off!

Can be boredom, lack of forage, or rarely a sign of pain - or just a habit. Try giving big piles of hay that they can hide in and chew :)

Okay thanks. They sadly died but I'm getting another couple soon so will bear this in mind.
