My little buddy Dash a 5 year and 5 month old Boar. Had stopped eating . Passed away today at home 3pm. He was scheduled to see the exotics vet at 5pm because he had stopped eating his hay and most of his vegetables. I left work early to be with him just in case.
I walked in to see my wife sitting next to his cage crying saying." He just passed not 2 minutes ago.
He was at the vets just a few weeks ago for a hay poke to his eye. They told me he looks great for an old man. I don't understand why his health deteriorated so fast . I feel so hollow right now.
Goodbye my buddy, I will always remember you and Love you.

BIG HUGS

Guinea pigs can sadly go downhill extremely quickly; that is when their fast metabolism is turning against them. Please do not beat yourself up. That is a good life span.

We can never choose when, what from and under which circumstances our piggies die; that is not in our control. All we can do is treasure them as a special temporary loan that can be cancelled at any time without notice and give them as much of what they measure a good life by: happy todays. If you are doing that, whatever happens, you have not failed them.

If it is any consolation to you, I have lost several piggies - especially over a weekend or a holiday - who haven't made it until the earliest possible specialist appointment or the earliest emergency operation slot. In fact, I have currently another one here on his own journey to the Bridge who missed out on one of the very few potentially life-saving emergency operation slots this morning. Just unfortunate timing developing a major health issue over the turn of the year. :( :( :(

Please be kind with yourselves in the coming days.
You may find our human grieving guide helpful to make more sense of the strong but often unexpected emotions and mind loops you are going to experience. The guide is both sensitive and practical: Human Bereavement: Grieving, Processing and Support Links for Guinea Pig Owners and Their Children

Dash will live forever in your heart, your memories and in the you he has helped to shape. It's not just us who make our guinea pigs count, it is also our pets who make us count. ;)

I’m so sorry that you have lost Dash. We never know how long we are going to have these little creatures, and it never seems long enough. We can’t always know the cause of sudden deterioration like poor Dash. It’s just heartbreaking and shocking when they go so quickly, so please do be gentle with yourselves as you mourn his passing. Sleep tight, little man x

I’m so sorry. Popcorn high over the bridge gorgeous Dash.

Thank you.

I sadly had to have Tudur euthanised this afternoon. He fell into a deep sleep yesterday afternoon and I was hoping he would just drift away but he woke up again in the evening and perked up a bit - but of course that wasn't going to stop the problem. I had to book him in at my local general vets for an emergency pts today to spare him any further unnecessary suffering. :(
He developed a runaway cancerous tumour in the thyroid area over the turn of the year which also increasingly pushed on his windpipe and through that created a major strain on his heart. The tumour quadrupled in size in just a day. It would have been a very dicey make or break operation at the very best because of the heart strain and the extremely delicate location.

It is one of these things you can never foresee and or prevent. They also have a tendency to happen at the worst time possible. Tudur would have turned 3 years this month but he has had two very happy years with loving his various wives and being loved by them in turn. :(

If you have never experienced it before, the sheer speed with which piggies can go downhill can be downright scary. It hasn't got anything to do with your good care or you missing anything critical; it is just their much faster metabolism that turns against them and puts things into such a fast forward that any meds often haven't got enough of a chance to kick in and you are running one step behind all the time even if you get seen by a vet straight away (done that as well, so I know first-hand). :(

Be sad (I am) but please don't feel bad about yourself.
