I was thinking of buying a rubber mat from Amazon, to put underneath my piggies cage so it's easier to clean out. Is it a good or bad idea?
I usually just put Hay or straw down for them. but the cage is ever so difficult to clean!

I use a stick on plastic table cover for my cages, which can be purchased from boyes. Another option is thestick on viynl floor tiles from b+q, you can cut both to size and its wipe clean so the wood underneath doesnt become soaked.

Hope that helps :)

What kind of cage do you have Maddey, and what surface is it on?

In my experience, smooth rubber mats are very easy to clean, but the ribbed ones are a nightmare, all bits of muck get stuck in the grooves!

I have a layer of towels and two of fleece. I find it easy to clean as you just shake the mess off them.

Furplast 120 large, n it has little squares which get all dirty and can't clean!
:(
With rubber mats. Is it ok for them to chew on?

Its a very good idea to have a plane rubber matt on the floor, but it would need to be covered up with something else. :) What bedding do you use for your piggies at the moment maddy?

Dont give up hope, everyone here does things different I'm sure someone will be able to help you find a way that suits you. :)

They usually have either hay or straw.... But usually hay.

Just hay? Hay is not very absorbent and piggies pee quite a lot, have you tried any other bedding underneath the hay? Shavings? Carefresh? Towels and fleece? X

Do you have newspaper under the hay? This would help with absorbancy.

Was thinking of trying fleece but I think it'll be messy and difficult to get my mum to was three times a week

I'm sure she would be happy to teach you how to use the machine, its super easy then you could be really independant with the piggies. :)

I would recommend newspaper underneath the hay - that's what I do in our hutch. If you put a good layer of say 6 sheets or so, it soaks up the pee well.

The other thing to maybe try (depending upon the size of your cage) are puppy training pads, the ones you house train puppies with. I used these when my pigs lived indoors and think they're fab! The soak up all of the pee and hold it without it going through to the cage floor, making cleaning out a doddle! Depending on the size of your cage and how often you clean out it may work out a little expensive though?

The good things about both of these is it makes it really eay to clean out too. You just roll everything up and chuck it away!

Personally, I'd steer clear of rubber matting as I wouldn't want them to nibble at it

:)

I do use newspaper, but I'm getting better as a piggy owner.
I've only kept them for a year but in my own for about 4 months, ever since Darwinny went to rainbow bridge :)

Thats great! :) I wasnt critizing, just suggesting. I think your obviously a very good piggy owner to be doing all this research
