Hi everyone. I'm new to this.
Myself and my partner are heading abroad for a week and are worried about leaving our to pigs.
My sister has agreed to call in twice a day to feed, water and generally make sure they are ok.
We will be leaving instructions for there care and pre bagging veg into daily portions for the week (I will include in the instructions to check the veg is ok before feeding) I will also be leaving some money in case of emergency or they run out of something.
They will be given fresh water pellets veg and hay daily. The only thing that I'm not sure she will do is clean them out. Do you think my piggies will be ok? Any advice.

Re cleaning it depends on size of cage and number of pigs. I can justabout get away with leaving it for a week but I tend to do full clean every 5 days. Perhaps buy her a box of gloves so she can at least feel comfortable to get rid of dirty hay and most of the poop every 2 days or so?

I left my piggies with a caregiver for three weeks and they were just fine. Just be very clear with the instructions.
Best of luck xx

Get her a box of disposable gloves. My mum always wears them when she looks after ours! Their poo doesn't bother me and I just wash my hands after lol! If she can clean the poo and any wet hay then that would be better than not doing anything..

When we go away for a week my mum pops in and sees to the pigs. I ask her to clean the bedding area mid week as a minimum which she does. I also leave a note with the vets phone number, the current ages and weights of the piggies and to tell her if she is worried at all to get them to the vet and I will cover the cost of vets/taxi.

I've booked ours into a piggy hotel for our holidays. Only £6 a night for both (not each) and that includes all food. I just thought it would be a lot less stressful than training someone who is unfamiliar with piggy needs.

You will be fine ! Just enjoy your hoilday and with your instructions you leave it will be like your Guinea pigs are on holiday as well ! The weeks go that fast , as soon as Monday is hear its Friday again
Remember to put pictures on here when you get back !

My neighbour looks after my piggies when we go away. She doesn't do it like I do eg she gives them far too many pellets but I'm just pleased that she is happy to do it.

I can just about leave my piggies for a week in a pinch without cleaning out (the result is very smelly and messy, though!)

If you can get your sister to simply bundle the soiled bedding as it is into rubbish bags after 4-5 days and put out fresh bedding (even if it is not as perfect as you'd like!), then that would be better. make sure that you have either a set of old towels to use immediately after your return or that she changes after 5 days to give you time to wash and dry the dirty bedding first after your return

Always leave your contact details and also leave a written note to give your sister permission to make any important decisions up and including end of life decisions on your behalf if you cannot be reached by the vet in an emergency. Make sure that she has both your phone number and hotel contacts, especially when you are abroad.

Tips For Organising Your Holiday Absence

They will be fine. I think we always worry that whoever takes care of them won’t do as good a job as us, their perpetual slaves 🙄
I had to leave our boys at a ‘hotel’ when we went away. I was worried because of the small cage etc. But they were fine 😁 another time we went away for a weekend and my niece sorted them out with her dad overseeing.

Enjoy your holiday and try not to stress. She could do a half clean after a few days - take off the top layer of bedding and add more. If it’s fleece, even easier.
