Hi, I’ve been wanting to supplement my guinea pigs with some glucosamine, but wondering what is the best one to buy, as obviously don’t want to get the wrong one. Can anyone recommend some that is available in the UK? Thanksss

Hi!

What do you need the glucosamine for?

My pig suffers with bladder sludge so to help with that mainly. He is also 4.5 years old so for a bit of joint care too:)

You can try Oxbow urinary supplement or try Feliway cat cystease capsules (mix the contents of 1 capsule with 2 ml of water and give every 24 hours or give 1 ml of the solution every 12 hours). It will incidentally on any joints as well.

Ive been giving my IC/sludge piggie oxbow joint support treats, they have 90mg glucosamine each. I also have the feliway cystease capsules I mix with either water or a small amount of squished strawberry (or peach, or critical care, or anything else to trick her with!). I use those when she has a flare. 125mg glucosamine each.

Haven't looked at the oxbow urinary support. She is doing a trial of 2 weeks of potassium citrate and hydrochlorothiazide because of a large amount of calcium crystals/red blood cells currently.

My boar is on Glucosamine on advice from my vet as part of his treatment for arthritis.

If you are going to use Glucosamine...you need a vegan one

I use this one

Vegetarian Glucosamine 750 HCl Capsules

...and give 1/6 th capsule per day

Ps ..my boar wouldn't eat the Oxbow joint support tablets

Thank you so much! Have you seen improvement since your boar has been on these?

It's difficult to say as he was started on regular Metacam at the same time . He is much improved now he is on Medication.

I take the Glucosamine too ....and I definitely think it has helped me !

I do give the joint support treats daily. During flares I add the cystease to increase the dose for a few days.

This is only the second time this piggie has had blood/pain and we are increasing the daily glucosamine and she also gets .25ml of dog meloxicam for a few days when symptoms are active.

It definitely helps!

One of my other piggies, who just passed away on the first of this month, had been on and off antibiotics for almost a year before we started treating with just meloxicam as needed and the oxbow treats daily. It absolutely helped. We didn't know about doubling up on the glucosamine in the first days of a flare. She still ended up on antibiotics when symptoms didn't improve after several days of meloxicam.

She had other health complications though, and passed away at about 5 years old 💕

Good luck! There's lots of info here on bladder management that I'm just trying as well. Diet, etc.

Aw bless him! Well i’m glad that he has improved regardless, it’s not nice seeing them struggling! I’ll definitely be giving it a go! Thank you:)

Amazing, i’ll definitely begin starting to give these then to help him out! He’s been on meloxicam for when he has flare ups for a little while now, and we have changed to low calcium pellets and filtered water and have seen improvement with this.

I’m so sorry to hear about your pig who passed:( they really do break your heart when they go💔🌈

Hi folks, happy new year. I have a sow (1.5 years old) who's recently been diagnosed with bladder sludge. She's on metacam and I've reduced her pellets to a tablespoon a day (Oxbow), am following the bladder piggy diet guidelines on here and filtering her water. I'd like to get her on glucosamine too but neither of my vets have any experience with it or know anything about it. I'm in central Illinois in the US - I know most folks on the forum are UK based, but does anyone happen to know a good vegan glucosamine supplement I could use with her in the US? Much appreciated in advance.

Hi and welcome

Have you googled cat bladder capsule supplements (which is basically what cystease and cystophan are)? Since glucosamine is classed as a food supplement and not as a medication, it is freely available online.

These powder filled capsules are not vegan (it is the shell and not the meat that is used) but they are better absorbed than vegan alternatives, for which you would have to google human glucosamine supplements and then do the maths when you grind down the pills with a pestle and mortar as to how many ml of water you need to mix a human tablet with in order to get the most comparable dosage. You will have to do this pretty much every day as the water mixture doesn't keep well.

We would like to ask you to please start your own thread with any question of yours in the future and not revive old threads as this can cause confusion; often the thread starters are no longer around. This thread here is 6 weeks old. A new thread will also help future posters find our forum via google searches. ;)
