Hi, please can anyone help me.
My 5 year old guinea pig has meloxaid twice a day-.4 MLS and tonight I had given him it at 9.15pm then my husband came in and asked if he needed his medication. I said yes thinking he said does he need it and so he gave him it too-at 10.15pm, so an hour later.
I'm very frightened about what affect it will have on him. The local out of hours vet said they didn't know what to do other than give him liquids,
Please can anyone give me advice...

I mean I thought he asked has he had his medication...

I hope you get an answer soon. If it’s the same as metacam (anti inflammatory) I think he will be ok. Will probably be just like us taking too many ibuprofen.

Hi, thank you for replying. It's MiPet meloxaid 1.5mg/ml for dogs.
He's a healthy weight and has been eating. Not showing any signs of illness or sleepiness yet..

Take a deep breath; a double dose won't do any harm to the kidneys. Just wait 12 hours for it to wear off.

Perhaps you make a little list with tick boxes for morning and evening dosages or have just one person who does the medication. If you are giving only one dose a day, please split it up. guinea pigs have a much faster metabolism than dogs and assimilate the metacam/meloxaid in about 10 hours.

Thank you, we feel slightly better now.

He's been having the medication twice a day for 3 years now and it's the first time anything like this has happened. The pigs live indoors with us and we love them like our children. They are a big part of our family. We're devastated and are sitting here waiting and watching. We couldn't feel more guilty.
After this fright, we'll tick it off on the planner calendar each time so that we definitely know, although we're such a good team normally. I misheard what my husband said.
Thank you again for your reply.

I double dosed antibiotic once by being so tired syringe feeding all night, i lost my mind. But my pig was ok, he just went very drowsy.

Thank you, I don't know what I'll do if something happens to him.
Thank you for replying so late. X

Thank you to everyone who helped us last night. Just to let you know that Onyx is doing well and showing no signs of being poorly.
My husband is staying home with him today and phoning our vet when they open.
Thank you once again.

Bless you. I am sure he will be okay, they metablosie quite fast and it is a well tolerated drug to boot.

What is his name?

When I took Velvet to the vets last Saturday he said that Meloxicam had just been licensed for guinea pigs. So pleased Onyx is doing well after your scare.

He's doing really well thank you. He's called Onyx and has a lady friend called Millie.

Thank you, the vet was happy with him so a huge relief.

Good news all round. Put this incident behind you and get back to enjoying your piggies again.
