Just a quick post asking for opinions on my girlfriend’s Guinea pig, Sienna.

This Guinea pig is our baby, and my girlfriend is concerned over a change in her eye that she saw today.

I have tried to comfort her and tell her it’s a simple infection, likely, and to clean it off with damp towel or cotton, and take her to a vet tomorrow… as that is the best course action. She found this change very quickly so there’s a perfectly high chance she is okay. She is an older pig and I cannot comfort my girlfriend any better based on my own knowledge, so I’m asking for opinions to help soothe her mind until tomorrow.

I am adding the two pictures she sent me, of which the one, is the best and other picture really isn’t showing much. I’ll put them both. :)

Any ideas and thoughts on this would make me very happy as I’m sure it will help her calm down. This Guinea pig, (and our amazing border collie) are somewhat of emotional support animals for my girlfriend since she got away from her evil ex boyfriend. I cannot be with her presently, so they do my job at times surely better than I can, so they mean as much to me. I am asking then, basically, for us both. Opinions?

💙💙

Can you describe what the eye looks like? (cloudy, glazed, etc.) Your photos didn't upload 😕

It sounds as if it could just be hay poke. Hay poke, most times, is easily resolved by drops the vet will give you. You're on the right track going there, the vet will tell you what's wrong and what to do. :)

Best of luck, keep us updated! 🤞

The picture isn’t clear or close enough to see very well unfortunately but it looks like maybe the conjunctiva is protruding? The best thing is to take piggy to the vet and have it checked out.
i hope piggy and your girlfriend are both ok

It does look very sore and uncomfortable, hope it’s just a nasty hay poke, your vet will be able to give AB’s and some tear gel just to make it more comfortable while it’s healing 🤞

Eye problems are not uncommon in guinea pigs and can usually be easily treated.
She does however need to see a vet for proper diagnosis and attention.
Something may be caught in the eye and need removing, and prescription strength eye drops are often used in the case of infection.

The good news is that simple eye problems can usually be treated by a general vet, so you don't need to search for a specialist.
However eye problems can get worse quickly, so please do have her seen as soon as possible.

It is really lovely of you to offer so much help and support to your girlfriend.
Please do let us know how you get on.

It definitely does look sore, but a hay poke or eye infection in guinea pigs isn't that uncommon and usually recovers fine with medication. She does, however, need to be booked into a vet once they open, as she will need prescription-strength meds and a proper assessment. I hope she's soon back to normal!
