Giant Guinea Pigs

Hello everyone, my name is Darby Santis and I have two boar guinea pigs and I just wanted to know how large guinea pig get. I heard the average weight is 1.2 lbs to 2.6 lbs about but I have to say both of my cavies weigh about 5 lbs each and are as healthy as an ox their fur is good and I keep it short nails trimmed eats a well balanced diet of alfalfa, guinea mix, and fresh fruits and veggies. Its just weird that my guinea pigs look like a small Pomeranian dog and eat more than they used to they can go through alfalfa in about a week and a half and that is a 24 oz bag. I don't know if they have a growing problem or if they are normal. They don't have bloat and they aren't sick the vet said so her self, she was also surprised to see how big they were when they were 3 lbs in September. I dunno is this normal? They also go through a large bottle of water in a few hours, I don't know what is going on, its like they are taking steroids...

Sounds like you've got big healthy piggies! One of our 'old' members from OZ also had bigger piggies I got to meet them. They were more than twice the size of ours

They eat alfalfa with everything, as well as a mix or guinea food they don't eat just alfalfa they have a mix and veggies.

Honestly I don't know, the girl I had gotten them from was using them in show and they are a mix of cornet and silkie... That is what she said though

I don't think that cuys are anything other then american selfs but I'm not sure. The wee companions rescue has a cuy that weighs 2.1 kg. So you'll know if they grow any bigger

I would take a look at this Wee Companions Small Animal Adoption, Inc. - "Cuy" Information

One website suggests that cuys can reach 5-6lbs so it sounds like you might have cuy's. Apparently they are showing up more in American rescues at present (Sorry if my assumption of you being US based is wrong, I'm going off you using lbs as a weight measurement).
