I rescued a sweet lil girl to be with my depressed Senior (loss of his girlfriend) a year ago , she is just 4 mo shy of 3 years. I lost a 5 year old, 10 yrs ago to Stasis, caught it too late. THis time I think I'm good but stasis is very tricky. So she got dehydrated on a buzy wkend and at a different home she was not use to and the water was different…by time i saw poor water intake(she is great drinker! ) she was not eating, pooping then stops, rushed to vet, got meds and back again 4 days later for Vit C/hydration IV. She eats her veges maybe once every 24 hrs, I'm doing Critical Care , round the clock, every 2 hrs, for total of 40 ml a day per vet(she is tiny, 2 lbs), Poop are minimal, meds keep her degassed and comfortable but I'm so scared…what will get her gi tract moving again? Kay in Florida, GP mom for 14 years, 8 total, all lived between 5 and 8 1/2 years…

Just meloxicam, 1 time a day for discomfort, Milicon for gas, a probiotic mixed in with her critical care, Harringtons FLora, and appetite stimulant and a motility med, Propulsid! Yes, weight is stable so far, this is day 8 of onset. I am staying on top of critical, but when will she poop! I'm so scared! I'm asking vet for another hydration session w Vit C, waiting to hear. Very buzy exotic only clinic but they get back to you when they can breathe.

I just want to win this battle so bad….i know its can be a long haul..just wish something that would get her GI tract moving again…

Hi

I am very sorry. Can you please hold your ear to belly and see whether you can hear a bit of gluggering or nothing at all?

How much are you feeding per day in ml? She will ideally need 60ml in 24 hours. 40 ml is the absolute minimum to just keep her alive but more is much better.

Ok, I'm doing 40 in 24 hrs, she is a petite lil girl put ok, I will up for sure. Yes, i do hear noises…

Noise come and go..just took stethoscope to her belly, it hurt, shes in pain post feeding i can tell, no noises right now

I do 5 syringes at a feeding and she is fed up on last one…i should go more and then will she suffer even worse…i chase her up and down cage for exercise…she lies in doggie bed for rest, her Senior 7.5 hr old cage mate, he tends to bully her not that shes ill

Good news - noises mean that the gut is working or at least working in parts. Total GI stasis means total silence. If you have a healthy companion, please compare the gut noises to see whether the ill gut is sounding OK or still slow.

Hopefully by upping the food intake you will eventually get more poos; a healthy piggy is eating the equivalent of 90-120 ml in a day, most of it as hay. Also make sure that you offer water but never just squirt it into the mouth.

Please brace that the first poos will reflect the stasis event and will be very small and very funny looking since the gut is basically one big conveyor belt that has stopped for a time.

What we cannot tell you is whether you are dealing with a spontaneous stasis event or whether it was caused by intense pain; this can be a short-lived passing event or an ongoing underlying problem that is radiating into the gut.

Please take the time to read our guides; you will hopefully find them very practical and helpful.

All the best.

Try to feed every two hours during the day if 5 ml is all what you can get to her in a session. It means that she is not at all eating for herself and still hasn't got any appetite. I know fully well how hard it is having been there with piggies of mine more than once.

Please see the vet again. GI stasis itself is not painful so it is highly likely that something else is causing it. :(

Ok thanks for everything..no , this was caused by dehydration over long wkend, (moved them with us to another home for an event, coming and go and did not realize she was NOT drinkingtil in trouble..we are on day 9, back to vet today at 3…get xray just to double check nothing else, i have husbands stethoscope so will listenn with my 4 year old …Princess always drank a ton, (senior not so much) I'm doing round the clock, back at Critial care, yes i give her water w syringe and she takes it no prob but have lil bowl in her cage too..she hurts, so worried, blockage? Will that show on xray? Appreciate everything so much…lost one to a acute statis, yes, it was fast, sat night stopped eating, wed they passed. 10 yrs ago, did not know what i do now and did not have exotic where i lived then , like I do now in Orlando. Prayers for Princess. Worried sick.

I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed for her.

There is no guarantee what sows up on an x-ray or scan (diagnostics are something to assess for the treating vet) but this doesn't sound normal to me. I wish I had better news. :(

Wed, 11:50 am…After syringe session, now up to 10 syringes (3 hrs gone w vet visit, travel etc) she suffers I can tell, hunched ,still position , eyes squinty…thats gut pain but keep on trucking I'm thinking..have list to ck w vet! Yes, producing minimal tiny poops

Just caught up with your thread. Poop output is always good (even if small and misshapen). Stasis can be a marathon. Hang in there.

I will say…see a difference in her energy with MORE critical care( still spread out) , actually saw her popcorn to sound of hay bag…so i guess blockage is my biggest fear, about to do another sesion

Ok gang, Prayers being heard…as i walked out To go to exotic vet..3 NORMAL poops! After all night every 2 hr care with critical care..60 ML, NOT 40,( min required and yes easier )but at your advice I did it! And i let my vet know! I saw a different lil girl at 8 am after 5am feeding..(it takes 20-40 min to feed, then i space next feeding 2 hrs from that.(alarm city, lol).I also saw a popcorn! And now drinking from water bottle..eating hay! But the critical care continues..Vet said until back 100 percent and even then 2, more days …but he thought she was slowly (as it goes, I did not know) coming out of it! He put her on new way better appetite drug, expensive but hes watched the studies for 2 years , now approved for g pigs ..Entyce is drug company name, oral solution Capromorelin, is name…way better than what is used in tab form so i have that too! And it’s just once a day! I thank you all, I thank God and and I believe in miracles! I'm the Walking Dead, but it’s worth it! For this SAVE! Again, I lost one to acute onset, worked full time, and a quick loss of 4 days. I'm not working, so I'm dedicating all my time to win this battle..my 4 kids educated (one still in grad school) and had them praying too..this is so scary..I could never hear bowel sounds, told vet, he did but not a lot but he said that takes time..its ok..ok, so not out of woods but feeling very helpful and poured me a big fat Margarita! Will keep you posted, thanks again, esp advice to INCREASE the intake..i saw the difference and I will be sharing in email to my exotic vet group…! God bless, Guinea pig lover Mom, Kay !

Well, she is taking in hay now good and some lettuce with her mate! What i do see is it is very very slow process and one cant get too excited cuz poops can go away and i freak out! Also, accidentally over fell back to sleep so 4 hrs between feeds vs 2…so that changed things up too…added a run for her in living room longer than her 6 ft cage just to add more exercise to regime. Cancelled all her plans for next month so i can monitor closely and try to get a WIN for sure when this over! Continued prayers please,
exhausted GP Mom, Kay

Ok, so she screams loud! For a few seconds, I thought issuse with cage mate, she is always after his butt(poops) and sometimes he will nip at her, and she screams..but sometimes..i rush over and shes bloated out..it goes away, like a gas attack..do I assume that is what it is.(PE yesterday by vet , aok and I agree, i see her abdomen way good, soft etc….this pain is post 13 ml feeding, water in between , she takes all this no prob..she joins in on lettuce etc…I have long run for her on floor on beach towels for extra exercise..had lettuce earlier w cage mate……Dr will check in tomorrow..he said POOPS dont pass with blockage, she has tiny ones…I'm due for another feeding now, ill delay as she is resting..we have rest of night, at 59ml in past 12 hrs, she takes syringe feeding so well…shes a fighter…but could she have partial obstruction..I'm a week. into this every 2 hr , feeding and hydration, finally tiny poops, but I'm just worried , am I missing something…?

Sat, 5pm…ok, Finally, at 70-80 ml per 24 hr period we have tiny lil poops!~ Shes great with Critical care and water! Not much with food with her cagemate, or water bottle but doing fine by syringe. She stays up 7.5 year old Seniors butt, and when he has had it he nudges her away and thats the scream….almost like she is mad/hurt! I'm still doing every every 2 hr feeding(30 min to administer) so this is really hard but I'm thankful I'm not working and can pull this off. The old guy is taking a beating i think…i have heard of this, poops for their healing value to the intestines…i have probiotic in her Critical care, Harrisons Fauna flora its called. This does feel like a marathon and i just hope it has a happy ending. The journey will continue! In it to win it!

Monday !10/30/23! So screaming is when the boyfriend wont let her have access to his butt(poops) , she is pooping fine now also, round clock pays off, I'm at 80 ml per 24 hrs but! Other than hay, nibbling..she is not eating her real food, sleeping all the time, is that from the exhaustion of up every 2 hrs? So i let her rest after 7:30 am feeding and that lasted til 2pm! Saw her drink water, walked away from lettuce, poops less, of course with less syringe feeding and just started back up w syringe in full force after letting her rest… Just cant figure out why she wont eat her fresh veges. This is a long journey and a lot of worry But i see tiny light at end of tunnel..at 5am poops for flying out during a feeding so we are getting there!
