I have been using fleece for the last few weeks and I have found that I need to change it every other day or so as I have had no success with a litter tray.

After the last couple of washes I have noticed that the fleece and towels still stink after washing. I use tesco nonbiological washing tabs and I understand that you aren't meant to use fabric conditioner with fleece so I'm not sure what to do.

I tried a longer washing cycle today but they still absolutely stink of wee.

I am trying carefresh today as an alternative but it is hugely expensive so I would like to get fleece to work for me if possible. Any tips?

This is what I do :

Get a bucket
Fill it with half cold, half warm water
Add some Co-operative Value Mint Washing up liquid
Mix until foamy
Then get stuck in! (With rubber gloves)
Just squeeze and rub until the stains come out
Then rinse off the suds until there isnt one in sight
Then ring out and hang on your washing line or wirly-gig.

There you have it! A minty scented fleece

Good Luck!

xx

apparently non-bio doesn't kill bacteria in urine, hence the smell, also if you wash on low temp it won't kill bacteria either, 60 degrees is minimum.
I've changed to bio and wash now at 50 as a compromise. it does felt the fleece a little but the smell is much better!

I have eczema so I never really stock bio washing powder because it goes for my skin.

In between washing my fleece in the washing machine I also soak my fleece in vinegar and rinse which gets rid of the pig smell while also being safe for piggies.

Thanks for the tips. I usually buy nonbiological stuff as I have a daughter with sensitive skin. I think I might try some biological stuff and see how that goes, or failing that the vinegar.

As I said I am trying out carefresh this week as I had bought some for the new hamster. I will see how that goes.

Put some white vinegar in with the washing powder / liquid anyway to neutralise the smell. I do that but I have to say I also change the fleece every other day as I find it smells but I don't want to use anything else as it makes such a mess! They don't smell when they come out of the wash though, only very quickly once they are on it.

I have to say I'm relieved someone else has the same issue as me - the other day I was thinking that it was just me who had smelly guineas!

I think it might be boars. Mine seem to be getting stinkier as they get older. They are 3 now and I must admit the thought of another 3 years of cleaning up after them makes my heart sink.

Meant to say if you are using carefresh and it works for you why not get some megazorb. You can buy at horsey places and also online - it works out much cheaper than carefresh I believe. I have used it and it's good but I don't like the mess it leaves, ditto anything like that.
