Had Jenny back at the vet today. I didn’t realise that they have to see animals every six months for review when on long term meds so I had a bit of a row about the last repeat prescription. Anyway she wasn’t doing brilliantly at that point so decided that a quality of life discussion was probably sensible with the potential of it being a one way trip 😭

Diagnosis - old (possibly the oldest my not young himself vet has ever seen)
Teeth - he thinks she might have some root overgrowth? As she is wet under the chin and watery eyes. Didn’t want to stress her by looking in her mouth as not a candidate for dental.
Ovaries - probably fairly sizeable masses in her ovaries that are impacting how she walks and causing her hair loss. Not a candidate for spay.
Skin - patch of alopecia round her eye from removing crusty exudate. Various little fatty lumps. Not a candidate for removal.
Back - probable lumbar spondylitis
Pelvis - probable arthritis
Knees - probable arthritis
Weight - 720g. At her heaviest she was only about 860g, she’s always been dinky.

On balance he was happy to pts today if that was what I wanted. A month ago I might have agreed because she was very lethargic but I think that was the weather as she has perked right up since it cooled down. She sleeps a lot. She doesn’t move as much as she did so is getting a wet back end, he is worried she is at risk of flystrike. She’s an indoor pig that reduces the risk so regular bum baths to keep it clean. She has had a go at zoomies recently and she is just generally content. She tries to climb up onto the bars at tea time and wheeks for dinner, snacks and head scratches. So I declined the pts.

We have 0.04ml gabepentin added to the mix. We can up the metacam a bit if we need to but we are trying one thing at a time.

Sigh, she’s such a little sweetheart, I want her comfy and happy and frankly I would like her to go when she is ready. He thinks that she might be one that grumbles on and will need a helping hand at some point. Today wasn’t the day though.

Total bill £96 😬

Old age is not nice when the issues are starting to pile up...

About half of my own needed emergency pts if it was the immune system that gave way first and let the way in for an illness blowing up with davastating speed, existing issues running away or if the natural dying process wasn't as smooth as I'd hoped. For the rest of my real oldies it was just 'their day' when the body packed in, from just a few hours to usually within 24 hours. The frailer a piggy the quicker that process usually is.
You just can never quite predict what will give first, in which way and when it happens. :(

But it is hard knowing that you are not all that far off yet; making that daily assessment is painful and heartbreaking. Try to see every extra day she still has her zest for life and enough quality as the blessing it is and make the most of the remaining time.

I currently have my Brathlys who I have to produce every 6 months for her maintenance meds. She is now very frail, totally blind. I dread the summer heat which may add just enough extra stress on her tiny body to tip the already fragile balance... :(

Thanks Weibke. Every morning we hold our breath. People ask me “Do you still have that guinea pig?” And I tell them that I did when I left the house 🤷‍♀️. She doesn’t hear well so in a morning we often have to poke her to be sure and for her to know her breakfast is there. With Timmy he was fine, he had his breakfast and then had a stroke. Within a couple of hours he had peacefully passed. I’ve probably revived her twice when I’ve found her cold and limp but she has rallied when I tucked her up skin to skin, expecting her to die. I think left on her own she might have already passed.

It’s the thought of seeing her trusting little face taken out back for the pts that I can’t bear. I’d be happier if they let me stay. He will do it with sedative injections so I can stay but that’s more traumatic for her so she has to go out back for gas.

I hope her time comes and she takes it with both paws. Just not quite yet. I’m not ready.

Hang on in there as best as you can... Unfortunately, no matter how old a piggy (or person in your life) or how long or short you have had them, it is always too early and you are never ready for it. :(

Aw bless her. I’m sorry that Jenny has so much going on but she’s a proper little trooper and is an amazing age. I hope that you have plenty of happy days left together and I hope that for your sake, she passes away peacefully at home when the time comes. But if not, you are making the decision out of love xx

I think she’s around 8-9 x
That's right, her honorary birthday is July 1st as she is a rescue and so we say she is 9. We have had her 7.5 years, she was in the rescue over 6 months and was an adult pig when found. They estimated them to be 18 months when we took them home. So yeah, old!

Poor Jenny was looking so sad this evening. We had a lovely cuddle and she really seemed flat. I gave her a bum bath a couple of nights ago but wanted to do it again as it was so grim before it really hadn’t quite got 100%. I hadn’t realised how bad it had got so feel dreadful. Now it’s totally clean I hope I won’t need to do it again too often as she doesn’t love the process. Her bits seem really swollen but I don’t know if they really are or if it’s just because she lost weight round there. I’ll have to keep an eye.

Tonight felt like one of those nights where keeping her going was the wrong thing. Then after her blow dry she had a lovely bumble round the front room she looked happy and now is eating a brown paper bag looking like the cat that got the cream.

She really needs to go be with Timmy I think and I just need her to make that decision herself. I’m not convinced the gabapentin is helping.

Jenny will let you know when she has made the decision. My Meggypops did. She didn't eat properly for a week, looked sad and miserable and didn't even want any syringe food which before she would chug down as quickly as possible. You know her best so will know when the time is right to take her on the dreaded one way vet trip if she doesn't toddle off to the Rainbow Bridge herself. It's so hard to know what to do for the best with these oldies ..... Have a hug

Precious girl! I hope you and her enjoy each day!

What a beautiful little old lady Jenny is, I hope you have loads more happy times with her 🤞

Oh Jenny - you really are a beautiful old lady. May you have many more naps and snacks before you trot off to the Bridge x

She needs to make the decision before we have to make it for her. Today her back leg seems to be a real problem, she can’t move around properly and it really isn’t right to keep her like this. I’m giving her chance to be having an off day but honestly, I think this might be the tipping point for her and we will have no choice but to take her on a one way trip to the vet.

Just go and be with Timmy now will you Jenny. It’s time 😭
