Four years ago I bought 2 beautiful baby guinea pigs (both female) and they have grown up together. Unfortunately, last night one of them passed away and so my remaining piggy is now alone. I am wondering whether to get her a new friend? She seems ok at the moment - she is still eating but seems a bit down as she's mainly staying in the bedroom part of her hutch. I know guinea pigs are social animals and should live in pairs/groups so would it be the best thing for her to get her a new friend?

I'm so sorry you've lost one of your guinea pigs .

Hello, welcome to the guinea pig forum. I do hope you'll enjoy being part of the community here.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your piggy, it is always hard to lose a much loved part of our furry family.

Please have a read of the bereaved guinea pig thread link that piggyowner has posted above, it will give you tips on how to look after the piggy who is let behind. It is good news she is eating, piggies grieve like we do but their survival instincts do kick in. She may well be quiet for a while. When you are feeling ready to get her a new friend then that will be the best for her. If you are UK based many rescues do piggy dating and can help you find the perfect friend for your remaining girl, just let us know where you are based and we may be able to recommend one.

Sorry for your loss once again and welcoem to the forum

Thank you both for your replies - they have been very helpful! I think I will look into getting her a friend as I don't want her to get lonely. I am from Shropshire in the UK - I'll have a look for a rescue centre nearby.
Thanks again,
Elizabeth

Walsall RSPCA and the potteries Guinea pig rescue are both excellent.
