I was in my local garden centre today and I thought I would chck out the pet section (no live animals) for some treats for my two spoilt new piggies Willow and Tutti as I was picking up some bargains I came across a particular food called Gerty guinea pig alongside others like Reggie rabbit or Harry hamster etc it was £1.99 and seemed okay although I didn't buy any I was just wondering is it a good food as at the moment my guinea pigs are on care+ its fairly big bag for £10 a bit pricey for my likeing but I got it free when I bought my guinea pigs as its what they eat there but i'm going to wean them off slowly in to a more resonably priced food so Gerty guinea pig Yay or Nay? Thanks from Me Tutti and Willow:rose Oh and care+ food isn't that big a bag really its about 25-30cm tall not that , that was valueable info but you know...;) thanks again

I don't use it myself but have heard that is has a lot of additives and isn't very good. I'm sure someone else will be able to tell you why in more detail :)).

In my opinion Gerty Guniea is rubbish, it's just very cheap pet food.
If you look closely it's full of those coloured biscuits which can't be any good for the piggy. Years ago when I was a very novice piggy owner I did use it-they sold it loose at our local petshop.

Nowadays though my Piggys have Burgess nuggets. :)

A lot of people here don't like the colourings and anti-oxidants in it, my neighbour feeds it as it's all hers will eat.
It's strange as hamsters and guineas have relatively similar mixes yet;
Harry hamster is great and Gerty is controversial
Wagg hamster is considered rubbish whilst their guinea crunch is considered good :/ lol

Hmm i'll steer clear of it I think thank you both and how much are burgess nuggets?:)

Yes i've heard that about Wagg food its bizzare really{:|

Our piggies have the Harringtons (previously Wagg) Optimum pellets as it contains no muesli which I believe are 'fatty' bits and piggies will pick these out rather than the pellets...known as selective feeding.
Have a look at this supplier, they do free delivery on orders over £19. I order 2x10k bags and smaller bags of Excel etc. which lasts our 18 piggies around 4-5 weeks.

Any new pellets/nuggets you introduce will need to be done gradually - I used to put a small dish of each to make sure they had enough.
I admit to having a muesli brand in stock here as if any one of the piggies feel 'off' find they will eat it but never offer it daily :))

I have a fairly large bag (not near it to check at the moment) it costs me £5.49 and last quite a while-about 3-4 wks for 5 Piggys.
I used to have the Burgess excell but I'm trying to cut their food down a little as Lottie is looking rather chubby so I thought I'd try just nuggets. :)

Aw chubby piggys and I might pick up some of that as they have it up at the farmers market in my town:) !

...started off with two until we discovered the fantastic people who have rescues...be warned :(|) ;)
We'd love more but sadly, space is an issue now as they live in home built pens in our lounge so without sacrificing more furniture, have to stay very disciplined :(

From what i have discovered there are 2 piggie foods made by Supreme that have very similar names both having Gerty in them. One is the muesli style and the other is an extruded pellet. My piggies love the pellet version. It can be hard to find the pellet one but my local Countrywide sells it as well as the vet uk website but just make sure youre getting the right one :)

As far as I know they still use artificial colours in Gerty Guinea (the muesli one) whereas Wagg Crunch don't. The CCT have had several cases of piggies being fed Gerty who tested positive for diabetes at vets & it was found to be down to the colourants.

I used to feed mine Gerty Guinea Pig but I found that they only picked out what they liked so I have moved mine onto pellets Excel and Oxbow! :)

Just quickly checked and the muesli is called Gerty Guinea Pig Original and the pellet is called GertyGuinea Pig Tasty Bites :)

Ive also tried mine with these tasty bites but they don't like them! Mine are very fussy lol

It's a nay from me. I dont like the way it's fluffed up with bits of hau when there given some anyway. The pigs don't like it anyway.

I usually get wagg from wilkos around £2 for 2 kg or the tesco one (not value) 3.99 for 3kg. The pigs love both.
