If you have followed any threads on health and illness, you know Mirtle has died. I had to whip her away from Gertie and Patch and have little Mirtle put to sleep. (due to cancer).

However, Gertie, every time she sees me becomes skittish and 'growls' at me. She has never ever been like this. I thought she had a chest infection, but when she can't see me there is no sound. When I appear it sounds like she is hyperventilating.

I am not sure if she thinks I have hurt Mirtle or will hurt her?!malletheadmalletheadmalletheadmalletheadmalletheadmallethead

I'm sure she doesn't hate you she is most probably grieving for MIrtle how is patch?

I'm sure with time and a bit of coaxing/bribing she will come round she is maybe in the guinea pig version of being upset :(

hope everything turns out ok big hugs x

Naturally, Gertie has been greatly affected by the absence of Mirtle. Without her companion she is feeling vulnerable and insecure, and has become fearful. Her 'growling' is directed at what she perceives to be a threat, e.g. the presence of a human. She does not hate you.

Gertie needs to gain in confidence, and any unwanted behaviour should not be encouraged, should be ignored. To have Gertie gain in confidence, I would suggest having daily floor time with her. Simply place her in neutral territory and allow her to roam, while you sit close by. When Gertie approaches you, offer her a treat so that she associates you with treats. However, do not offer her a treat when she is exhibiting unwanted behaviour. Talking to her often and regularly may also be of benefit, again, only when unwanted behaviour is not being exhibited.

In her current state, Gertie could easily become stressed. Naturally, stress should be avoided.
