Gerbils or rats

I love rats and I love gerbils but I don't have either.
I have reasherched a bit about both but I have one question

Which one would be easier to care for and mainly cheaper

I know you will have to pay for the cage toys etc but I am only asking which is cheaper enclosure wise and which you would recommend more as a pet x thanks

BTW Rats are bigger so need a much bigger cage.

Gerbils are easier to care for with out a doubt. I have rats now, and have had gerbils before this for the last 10 years or more.

One tip if getting gerbils, get males. They are more Likely to get along.

Another thing with gerbils is they are a much hardier pet. All pets get sick and have their common illnesses, so must have a vet bill fund at the ready incase. I find gerbils more of a pet to watch where as rats are much more human friendly.

Gebrils live longer than rats normally, seems crazy when you look at the size difference. Most of my gerbils got to about 3 - 4
