hi everyone! just curious as to how often you take your babies for a check up at the vets? i’ve managed to find one not too far from me that has a vet who specialises in exotic animals so i’m over the moon! what sort of things should i expect from a check up? is it advised to book them in for their first quite soon after getting them? thanks!

Yes do get them checked fairly soon after you bring them home.
Otherwise, an annual general check will do - it’ll be a check of eyes, ears, teeth, skin, listening to chest etc

Plus a basic check up after arrival gives you a chance to meet the vet and register your piggies.
This is a huge plus if you have to contact them in an emergency, as it saves all the paperwork when you may already be stressed.
Plus you will already know exactly where the practice is, where to park, etc.
This is much better than trying to work all fo that out in the dark, on your own with a sick piggy in the car.

Hi and welcome

It pays to have your new piggies registered and checked soon after their arrival so they are on the books. A yearly general check is recommended.

What we recommend is that you get into the habit of doing a weekly weigh-in and body onceover as a health monitoring measure at home so you can spot any developing problems early while you have a much greater chance for a good outcome.

You can find the necessary detailed information and practical guides teaching you what to look out for in a special chapter in our New Owners Guide collection: Getting Started - Essential Information for New Owners

I try to get mine in for an annual vet check but Covid scuppered that for a few years.
It helps keep the vet records up to date as well as make sure I haven’t missed anything
