So I'm a bit out of my element to be honest and have found myself with a gecko. 🤣 No I didn't go out and impulsively buy one. The little cutie (been told a little girl) was actually found in our work before Christmas and seeing as no one came to get her, I volunteered to take her home. To be honest I was genuinely worried she might just be left to die. Had been given cabbage! And I mean I'm no gecko expert, but even I know they don't eat cabbage.

I got a quick fix tank to put her in and some food, substrate etc with the help of a reptile expert at pets at home. He told me she was female, a baby and looked to be a leopard gecko. However I'm not so sure she is...I'm torn between that or (as a gecko owner/breeder on Instagram has suggested) a house gecko.

My main priority today was just to get her out of there and into a bigger space with proper food. I bought mealworms again as the guy suggested, but also thanks to a Google search.

My question is what if she is a house gecko? I guess only real way is to see a vet, but we don't have any reptile savvy vets in the area.

thanks for reading my spam 🤣 just an animal lover who couldn't leave her.

attached a picture but it doesn't show her pattern that well she is spotty and darker.

I used to have a pair of geckos but it was so long ago now that I don’t remember a thing...

Aw we almost got a gecko but didnt in the end, I think they like to eat crickets, my tarantula has defintely shared her crickets witj a gecko from work- I'd say keep her warm and feed her crickets or mealworms until you get some expert advice on heat lamps and calcium and all those tricky reptile things! I'm sure we have some gecko slaves on the forum though...

Reptiles or lizard have never interested me, maybe it's a case of once you have one you start to get the bug. One day maybe

She's beautiful! I can't tell you what she is..but I can 100% tell you she isn't a leopard gecko. Well done for giving her a home poor thing.
If you're on Facebook, try joining the group Advancing Herpetological Husbandry. It's full of really knowledgeable breeders and keepers, with care based on science. Someone there will be able to tell you what she is and how best to care for her, I'm sure.

Yeah I think I'll probably get some crickets too. They looked bigger than her!🤣🤣 Apparently mealworms were a safe bet, but she hasn't shown much interest and she must be really hungry! Thank you ☺️

Aw she’s such a little cute 😍 I know nothing about gecko’s apart from that they need to be kept in a warm environment and eat crickets, maybe locusts too?

I too was going to suggest @Lady Kelly but have seen she has already been tagged
She is adorable! We've given her a place to hide and get away, but she's just sat there staring at us since we put her in the tank. I'm hoping it's a grateful stare and not a 'if I get out of this tank you're in trouble one 🤣🤣

Ah thank you! The more pictures I'm looking at the more she doesn't look like a leopard gecko. Beginning to seriously doubt the reptile expert lol. Though when I took her in she was a considerably lighter colour...almost white. I'm definitely leaning more toward house gecko- I gather this variety needs more heat than a leopard which is why I'm like AHHH 🤣 luckily we have tortoises so we have access to the heat bulbs etc, but I don't want to heat her if she doesn't need it. I'll have a look on that group now- thanks so much for the suggestion ☺️

Thanks for the tags. We do have a gecko, she's my hubby's and he purchased her before I met him so I don't know massive amounts. Just looking at Google images and the tail in particular I would be more inclined towards house gecko than leopard. We have an albino African fat tailed gecko and I believe leopard geckos have similar tails. Yours looks a lot slimmer but then if she hasn't been feeding properly that could be the reason why.

Mealworms and crickets will be good for her. We have a viv, we use paper on the bottom, a water bowl, a bowl for the live food, a couple of caves and some fake greenery. We sometimes have a kitchen roll or toilet roll inner tube that she likes to hide in too. Light on a timer, heat mat underneath the paper. Think that's about it

Ours seems a bit daft when it comes to mealworms. Unless I use tweezers to wiggle them in front of her face she doesn't seem to notice them. I don't think they move enough for her so we don't bother with them anymore. Crickets should come in different sizes and you should be able to get some tiny ones suitable for her
