New Born Pup
Hi,
My guinea pig Mo is around 5 years old. His poos have never been perfect sausages since i've had him (1.5 years) and he's been back and forth to the vets to solve it with Fibreplex and removed wet food but they have never been normal although he has always been perky, active and ate/drank well.
At the start of the year noticed his breathing was very laboured and brought him to the vet who prescribed sulfatrim and the infection cleared up. 2 months later the same thing happened - sulfatrim prescribed and it cleared up. A month later, it happened again I was given a longer prescription of sulfatrim for 2 weeks. During this time he was quite bloated and passing some gas but the vet wasn't concerned. Poos were still lumpy but had some shape.
After two weeks he still wasn't well, wasn't eating as much and had lost 200g. I brought him in and the vet said his stomach was very sore and gassy, but they said his lungs were clear and he may have scar tissue from previous infections which make his breathing appear that way now. He was prescribed baytril, metacam for his stomach and given sachets of critical care to help him gain weight. After two days we went for a check up and the vet was happy he was improving and had gained weight. However during his time on baytril his stomach was gurgling loudly, he became very bloated and he began having diarrhoea. He had also started eating very little, apart from fresh grass which is his favourite.
I took him to the vet 5 days ago who couldn't feel any masses in his stomach but gave us a container to hand in a stool sample which was sent off on Monday (3 days ago). He was then prescribed sulfatrim to try and kill bad bacteria in his digestive system (or something like that). He still is having diarrhoea and eating very, very little apart from some grass on his own and I syringe feed him 4 times a day. I massage his belly and put an electric toothbrush under him to help alleviate the gas, I have syringed him poop soup from my other guinea pig, given him fibreplex twice a day and syringe him water with Pro-C mixed in (also in his bottle in his cage).
The vet is reluctant to give him an xray as he can't feel anything wrong with him. I asked him if there was anything he could give him for the gas and I was told 'not really'.
I don't know what else I can do apart from wait on the results of the stool sample and keep doing what I have been doing - any advice?
