We’re going through quite the streak of illness with our herd these last few months:(

Right now I worry a lot about our 4yo sow Rosie, who went off her food three weeks ago. This was on a Saturday evening so we went to the animal hospital, where she had a blood draw, xray and ultrasound. Her stomach was incredibly bloated so they also went for a CT scan to find her issue.

From the blood draw we know that her liver is completely off and the CT showed a gallbladder stone. The vet said it is only the second time in her career that she’s seen a guinea pig with that.

The hospital staff is great, they got Rosie back to eating and we took her home after a few days there. We did two weeks on pain meds and antibiotics at home. She seemed completely back to normal and we were so so relieved.

That lasted until yesterday, when she again stopped eating and looked miserable. She then spent another night at the hospital, now we’ve got her eating and she seems to have her energy back.

The plan seems to be to make her comfortable with pain meds for as long as possible. Does anyone have any ideas or experiences with gallbladder stones? Is there something we could do for her?

She is an incredibly energetic, fit and feisty pig and I want to explore all options.

I don't have any experience with gall bladder problems, but just want to say I'm sorry your herd is having health problems at the moment. All the best to Rosie.

I hope somebody more experienced will be on soon to respond.

I’m so sorry. I’ve no Experience of gall bladder stones. I’m not sure whether many other active members on here will have experience either. However, many of us have had to nurse our poorly piggies So can empathise with you. I think you have to be guided by your vet as to the best way to keep her comfortable (you will be the best person to gauge how she is feeling) and the vets will look at a variety of pain meds for her. I know that when I’ve had a piggy with liver issues, my vet did recommend a liver tonic that we had to make up for him from a variety of supplements ground into a vegan omega 3 oil. It may be worth asking your vet, whether something like that may help her.

Thinking back, I do also recall giving a milk thistle supplement to one of my poorly pigs – again this may be worth discussing with your vet
