Hi, I hope everyone is doing oki and that their piggies are recovering from any issues. I feel like we can't catch a break at the moment...

Last night I went in to check on fury and spend some time with him and let him have a run around...I check him every day but don't clean him unless he needs it...but last night I noticed his skin wasn't covering the tip of his penis...I panicked but read another forum post on here about cleaning it down and the surrounding areas gently with some soft tissue and cotton buds and warm water...so I got to work cleaning him down and it eventually seemed to fully cover up...

However I went back in maybe 30 minutes ago again to check him and again it was exposed...so again I gathered my supplies and cleaned him down...problem was is that there was one bit of hay there and that was it...however I did notice even with cleaning it gently that it felt very rough against the cotton bud the only way I can describe what it felt like was sand paper...I'm not particularly savvy on if its meant to feel that rough all I know is to keep on top of its cleaning if he stops...is there anything else I can try for him? We are going to make an appointment at the vets in the morning for him to see if they can help...he is a long haired silkie piggy for reference although I keep his fluffy round his back end and sides short so he doesn't drag it through his pee...

Hi

Have you tried to express the penis to see whether there is something stuck in the shaft (Semen rod, build up of smegma (which can harden over time and become crumbly)? Sometimes retraction can be impeded or just difficult, or it may not come back immediately after an impediment.
More information on boar care, and the issues mentioned above in this link here (with pictures): Boar Care: Bits, Bums & Baths

Yea I did that...I do that normally every week to check for sperm rods and things because he has had a few sperm rods and I removed what smegma was there...which was only a little bit I have kept on top of it since getting them (when we got the two boys together it looked like neither had been ever checked or cleaned so it took a couple days doing little stints at a time to get them all cleaned up) but he is clean he had a little residue around the outside which I removed and the bit of hay this time...he is prone to hair in the area due to his long fur but I remove that every time I see it...

Uodate: we've spoken to the vet and he suggested something called KY Jelly...he said we can get it from any chemist...is it safe for piggies to use? Or is there a particular brand that we should use/avoid?

Hi

Any mild lubricant should be OK but have you expressed the penis fully and checked whether something is stuck in there that is preventing the penis from retracting properly and that in the long term could cause discomfort and potentially a nasty infection if left in there? Especially as there has been no hands-on examination by your vet.

A lubricant is just a 'plaster' measure - addressing a symptom but it won't be any use if there is a tangible underlying issue. It is usually recommended in these circumstances but generally only after an examination and if there has been nothing else obviously untoward found.

Yes I have fully expressed his penis to check under the skin...i removed a bit of smegma...some hair and one strand of hay...I did it again today and found a few hairs but that was it...but from what I saw when I was fully expressing it was the skin looked almost like it was rolling in on itself exposing the tip rather than covering it...I cleaned him again and rolled it back over for him before letting hims rest...I get up ever few hours to check on him so ill be cleaning him and rolling it back over for him if needed...we have asked for a face to face appointment were just waiting for confirmation on the date and time as they didn't have the schedule available when we rang...
