Hi I’ve have a new little piggy (got him about 3 months ago so he’s still very young). He seems to have little bald patches. I know they have these where the fur partings are but his seem to be getting more. Does this look normal (see attached photos) or should I take him to the vets? I have some older piggies too who I’ve taken to the vets which was very stressful for them so I would like to avoid it if not necessary. Thanks for any advice.

Hi

The middle of a rosette can look a little bald in some piggies as the inner hairs point in all different directions but check with other rosettes to see whether they are all the same or not. It doesn't ring alarm bells with me as several of my own abys have wide rosette centres; they just shouldn't look jagged or angular or much larger than the others on the body.

If in doubt please see a vet for vet strength mange mite treatment and do not home treat on spec with low dosed pet shop stuff - that is a waste of money because it is not strong enough to cut through an acute outbreak and will only at the best temporarily suppress it. Especially if your piggy and their friends start stratching vigorously and in increasingly frequency and intensity.
