I treated m6 boy just in case for any parasites about 2 weeks ago because of his excessive itching but now I noticed some dandruff along his back the other day. Also, how much hair drop is to much? Rox is an Aby, just turning 1yr this month and he leaves a nice amount of hair all over his fleece bedding and it becomes little lumps in the wash. I'm assuming longer haired guineas shed more but now I feel it might be the beginning stages of possible fugal?

I'm in the process of ordering Coconeem melt and Neem shampoo from Gorgeous Guineas.

Does it come out easily when tugged?

I am not a fan of neem products for treating fungal though I know others use them. I would recommend Eniconazole which is used as a dip. You ideally need a vet diagnosis first though and shouldn't home treat without knowing what you are definitely dealing with.

Yeah, I can easily pull out 4-7 hairs without any force.

I've been meaning to go to the vet for a basic check up since I just got Rox less then 2 months ago but I work long days, so I need to find a good day to ask for off. Maybe try and see if I can go tot he vet this monday.

I think it would be a good idea. Does he live with any other pigs?

Ok. If there had been others you would have needed to treat them aswell.

I have no other advice apart from take all you piggy to the vets.
I hope Rox gets better soon. x

As there has been a change of home and environment, the stress of the move might have lowered his immune system enough to cause a problem, definitely worth a trip to the vet. Keep him on a good healthy diet in the meantime and I hope all goes well. It was lovely that you were able to take him on! Well done :tu:.

UPDATE - - -

Went to vet, they told me he has Lice (what I thought was dandruff) and attempted to unload a bunch of stuff onto me. I want everyone's opinion on the Meds/Dip he gave me before I even put it on Mr Rox. Firstly, he wanted to give Rox an anti-itch injection (but I said no, was $40 and he already gave me a dip, ointment and by-mouth med). I was then given AllerG-3 (omega 3) and told to put it in his food or in his mouth and he says its for allergies. Then I was given a Puralube Ophth Ontment to put on him before the dip on the 'infected' area but I'm not sure what he meant by that since his whole body is itchy, and he also gave me the dip. Lime Sulfur dip, which the bottle says its for dogs and cats only . . . ummm?

The vet wasn't to helpful, he lithely came in and picked up Rox, looked him over and then told me want he needed and didn't explain much plus his English wasn't very strong. The vet-tech girl doesn't work with Guineas, so she wasn't much help ether since she only knows what to do with dogs and cats.

Thoughts on what I was given, advice? Thank you so much.

Am not really familiar with those products apart from the Lime Sulphur which I have heard of but never used. It seems a bit excessive. I will need to do a bit of research and come back to you tomorrow.

It's alright, I did research and felt it was best to return everything. The dip is meant for mange and the omega is ok but I can use flaxseed oil too.

If the vet believes it to be lice do you know if you can get Lyclear Creme rinse where you are?

If the vet suspects mange mites (invisible to the naked eye but can cause skin debris) he would need to be treated with an Ivermectin product.

Lime sulfur dip is a very old fashioned remedy for mange in dogs! The omega 3 oils would support the skin, again in dogs they are prescribed, my lab had them last year. I never heard of guinea pigs getting omega 3 oils prescribed by the vet before personally but I am just an owner not a vet, perhaps its just skmething I never heard of.

Is ivermectin perhaps not licensed in your country?

I'm going ahead and getting him some Ivermectin (horse paste from ValleyVet website) since I can get a tube for less then $3 with $7 shipping and the tube is good for 1250lbs of animal. plus it's apple flavored. Going to need to do some math for the dosage. Since Rox is only 2lbs and 12ozs I will need to measure this out with the Guinea Lynx recommendations. c:

@olizzylizzyo I don't know if the ivermectin for horses (I also have a horse) is the same strength as the ivermectin formulated for guinea pigs, I have no experience of using horse products on guinea pigs, - I have always used ivermectin (usually sold as Xeno 450) which is formulated for use in guinea pigs and rabbits. I would advise checking that its suitable to use for a guinea pig at the strength formulated for a horse. Good luck.

@olizzylizzyo obvioulsy I don't know which horse wormer product you were looking at but I had a quick look at the ivermectin paste horse wormer which is sold in the UK from the company that I order mine from and its about 1.8% ivermectin, whereas the Xeno 450 or "Easimec" that is used for guinea pigs is 0.5% ivermectin - so that's quite a big difference in strength. Apologies if you already realised that but I guess at least it might warn anyone who reads this in the future :)
