Cody was makes a moaning noise when scratching his back/ cleaning. He hates me touching anywhere near it even tho his the most loveliest guinea pig he loves affection normally, he will go for me. I’ve tried mite stuff. Took him to the vet. Not gonna lie the vet didn’t help . He had no clue. He did managed to show me he has very Flaky scabby skin under his fur (my pig won’t let me look without going for me) He checked for ringworm.mites and brushed through his hair with a metal brush. He gave me painkiller metacam and antibiotics incase it’s bacterial and told me to use mite stuff in a weeks time after. He loved the pain killer but antibiotics done nothing . I done some more research myself and found gorgeous guinea pigs aromatherapy shampoo, I sent her pictures as it said on her website if you’re unsure what one to get asked and she told me it sounds like his got a fungal infection and
Often with this type of problem the nerve endings are affected, often around the rump. This makes it uncomfortable when you touch them. Finally I know what it is, I’ve used it 3 weeks and it’s cleared up the dry skin but the nerve damage is still there. I’m wondering once they have nerve damage from fungal infections does it go away and if not can I ask the vets for metacam as a regular thing?

So sorry for the long thread

I would suggest you see a savvy vet for a proper diagnosis of the issue. Only a vet carrying out a hands on check can tell you exactly what issue you are doing with and prescribe the appropriate treatment.

I hope a better vet can help you sort this out. 🤞

Hi and welcome!

I agree - please see a more experienced vet for a hands-on examination. More home treating on spec won't help and will only prolong Cody's suffering.

Can you please specify what medication brands/strength and treatment have been used; especially for mites and in how many rounds? Have you been treating mites on spec with pet shop stuff, which is ALL too low dosed to cure an acute case?
PS: We have done the necessary digging around to find the actual concentration on what they label as 'vet strength', which is still too low to get on top of an acute case because it is still only just designed for (unnecessary) prevention but not acute treatment.

Guinea pigs do not usually suffer from 'nerve damage' after skin parasites or a fungal infection. It usually only means that whatever the problem is - since we have only your description and no access to your piggy - it has so far not been adressed and cured properly. The sensitive skin rather points to under-treated mange mites; but as I can only guess and decidedly not diagnose, only a competent vet can do that for Cody.

Shampooing won't solve the underlying problem, either, I am sorry to say. It is just more wasted money.
