Hi! My guinea pig was having a molar overgrown issue last month but she recovered after trimming for 2 times. More than 2 weeks ago, I noticed that one lower front tooth was shorter and whiter than the other. Two days later, that tooth is broken, with only 20% percent left. It has been 2 weeks now, but the tooth doesn't grow back a bit. Yesterday, I saw her scratched her front teeth three times using her front leg and back leg. She is eating normally and didn't loose weight. But she gets fluffy occasionally showing signs of not being very comfortable. I haven't took her to the vet yet and consider going this weekend.
Does anyone know the reason for this and have any suggestions for me? And whether it is necessary to go see a vet? Thanks!

Hi!

It may be that the tooth is also broken further down. Keep in mind that an incisor is about 4 cm long and runs under or over the jaw and the gap between incisors and premolars. If your piggy is pawing the tooth, then it is a clear indication of pain/discomfort.

Please see your vet before the weekend.

It may be that there is a root abscess that at the bottom of your piggy's dental problems because it is chewing unevenly from the pain - the same way you are not chewing on the side where you have a painful tooth. ;)

This is a picture of my Nesta's incisor after the removal operation; you can see the rotted bit at the end - and how much longer it is than you would expect!

Thank you for your reply! I am wondering is root abscess treatment a big surgery and is incisor removal a must? I am just worried that my vet is skillful enough for this or not.

Sorry you have a dental, problem with your piggie. Do you live in the UK, anywhere near Northampton? Simon Maddocks at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic is the go to piggie dental vet. He deals with around 20 dental piggies a week, is very experienced and can do conscious dentals so no nasty GA. I have just come back from there today with my two piggies Bill and Ted.

Aw, didn’t know where you lived. I think there is a list of recommended vets on the Guinea Pig Lynx web site which is US based. There is also information about guinea pig dental problems there too, here’s the link, good luck
