Hiya
When i went out and fed the piggies early this morning their water bootle had frozen and i dont know how they went without water but i change their water but during the day have been checking their bottles to make sure they hadnt frozen over which they hadnt thank god :)

But is their ways i can stop the water freezing over during the night when iam not around ?

They are in a shed aswell and have pently of hay to snuggle up to

I saw on TV that you can add a bit of pure glycerin in the water to stop it from freezing. You may want to have that confirmed by a more senior owner. I keep mine inside so I don't really know for sure

You can get a bottle cover for them, I think Hutch and Newton do them. Is it not possible to have some low heating in the shed? it is set to be really freezing for the next fews days/nights.

I was thinking about that lol but would it be safe to havre it on all night at a low heat - i have two bales of hay in with them and was wondering weather if it got to hot in their it might catch alight rolleyes

I use tubular heaters in mine just make sure you keep them away from the hay and its best to put a cage up around them so no burns it just keeps them from freezing it does work my guinea pig don't live outside but my rabbits and birds do and we have no problems with water freezing over

Tubular heaters are great but even a small oil type plugin radiator from Argos for example would do the trick (if you have electric in the shed?) it is just to keep the chill off as opposed to making the shed hot. I wouldn't recommend any sort of gas heater of course!

Oooh I saw bottle hugger things up at pets at home today. I didnt notice the price tho

Could try making your own water bottle hugger from some bubble wrap or old jiffy envelope, wrap round the bottle and pop an old sock over the top to keep everything in place. The metal spout/ball bearing may still freeze if it's really cold, but it's worth a try.:)

I have the scratch & Newton bottle hugger & it doesn't stop it freezing :-( I like the idea of putting a thermal sock over it, gonna try that along with the hugger hopefully my lil pigs will not be without water then. :))

I have 2 bottle covers (1 thermal sock type and a scratch and newton one)on the rabbit's bottle and it still freezes, it was -9 this morning though and probably colder overnight. I think there has been 2 days in the last week where I haven't had to defrost the bottle twice a day. I've been mixing some hot water with the cold to stop the bottle freezing as quick.

I'm glad my boys aren't outside, it's nasty weather, isn't it? I can't say as I can help, I've never had mine outside so I don't know any helpful tips. The day isn't so bad because you can check on them if you're home but I imagine it's a worry over night :(

Poor little things. Keeping them from freezing is one thing but the water bottles are another!

I know that you can get like jackets for the bottles, I assume it's to stop them getting too hot in the summer and getting too cold in the winter.

Here it is :) hope I was somewhat useful.

Theres a few things you can do but i find that filling all water bottles/bowles with warm water helps. I also add a bowl of water and place it on top of a snuggle safe. You could try those bottle snugs?

Mine have never used a bottle. Its - 10 here and my water bowls are now starting to freeze even with the above addages. I find that on a morning its only the top layer that freezes slightly, so i think it stays liquid for most of the night.

heres a tip i am trying tonight wrap the bottle in tin foil, ive done that and put 2 socks on it thats for my bunnys the piggies are all inside

Mine were freezing solid and after I'd defrosted them they'd be frozen again in a matter of hours.
During the bad snow a couple of weeks ago I bought some thermal socks from primark 2 pairs for £2.00 or something like that and they have a really cool pattern on them too lol.
I cut each sock in half (made 8 covers) and it worked brilliantly but unfortunately it's gone even colder (-12 at 7.30 this morning) so I'm having to ration the hutches to 1 bottle each so they have a set of bottles through the day and a new set of bottles at night.
My friend who keeps rabbits suggested covering the bottles in 2 layers of tinfoil then put the cover over it as this is what she does and hers haven't frozen yet and they're kept outside in hutches whereas mine are in a shed.

I wrapped my buns bottle in tin foil, bubble wrap & a thick sock. I then cover the hutch with carpet & an old blanket. The hutch is in the shed which I know won't make much difference to outside temps.

It's still freezing :<>

Now they can only have one bottle at a time so I can swap them about.
