hi there
my 2 sows are indoor piggies & have an indoor run which they are in every day for exercise , they also have a large cage.
i let them out tonight in the run then i let them have a trot around the living room :) it wasn't for long because i was afraid of them getting stuck somewhere or chewing wires?
do any of you let your pigs free range?
advice please
many thanks

Jerry loves to free range. He does crazy laps around the living room :)) I pop his cage on the floor and leave it open. He happily jumps back in when he needs a wee, or a drink of water.

It's important that you piggy proof the room first, or, as you say, they will easily chew through cables. All of my cables/plugs etc. are raised off the floor. I also make sure that the room is newly hoovered, as it's quite easy to drop crumbs of food, or other bits and pieces on the floor without noticing. Guinea pigs will try to eat anything and everything!

I have 5 girls who free range from 6am to when we go to bed- about 10pm. Sometimes later if were on holiday. They are kept in my daughters room. Fortunatly there are no electric cables for them to chew and furniture is just pine. They have fleece blankets on the floor and continual access to their hutch. If truth be know though they do spend most of their time just lounging in the hutch after the initial burst of 'oooo we're free'. All the furniture is high enough off the floor for them to explore underneath.

All of my pigs have a period in the day where they come out to play with me in my room. Clive especially loves this, he's a little explorer! I have cables however they've never bothered with them, although they are all tacked to the skirting boards for safety. Not to mention it makes the room look better! The only issue with free ranging is getting them back in afterwards rolleyes

I didn't train him to do it. He always wees and poos in the same corner in his cage. If he's free ranging and he needs a wee his behaviour changes instantly. He starts looking around for his corner, and sniffing at the ground - he's looking for his own scent I suppose, much like dogs do. He always manages to find his way back to the cage and then just hops in and runs to his corner. We have rare accidents when he doesn't make it back to the cage, usually if he's on the other side of the room, but mostly he goes in his cage.

I'd have no chance with my other boys. They just do their business anywhere and everywhere!

We have 3 sows and a boar and they are always free ranging. The cage is left open from when we get up until we go out about 8 am and then when my daughter gets back about 4 pm until 11 pm, but they settle down to bed when news at ten comes on.
