Hey everyone! My shed has been up and running for a good few weeks now and my piggies are loving it! It has 4 hutches (6 boars 2 pairs 2 singles) and plenty of room for them to run around on the secured shed floor when the weathers dull.

Just had a few questions really as i want to do abit more work on it over the next few weeks:

1. What useful items do you keep in your shed?
2. how do you keep it cool on hot days?
3. how do you keep in warm in winter?
4. how do you make it feel more homely for the piggies?
5. If you have lighting installed - how and what have you used for this?
6. hmmmm forgotten now lol but if you have any other useful info i'd be very grateful :)

Sorry for all the questions! I seem to be on a mission today - i went out to clean the shed 5 hours ago came back in 5 mins ago and i've cut the grass - weeded the garden - laid slabs over an old flower bed that i had to dig up- had a fire with old fence panels and now finally i have a nice garden and Oh of course the sheds clean LOL

my shed's full of lawn mowers and sawdust and bbq stuff! all very useful stuff, but it wouldn't really be suitable for jinnywigs! i know you can get heat pads that you put in the microwave http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/snuggle-safe-heat-pad.html and you can buy warm fleecey beds that you can put the heat pads in to keep the piggy snuggled and warm http://www.cosycavies.co.uk/products/snuggle-oos™/
i find with my piggys that tunnels and boxes are a must have during play time, pigloo's and that sort of thing. plenty of wood toys to chew or they'll be nibbling the shed! my shed has a little perspex window in it, which would be perfect, but my pigs live inside. i don't know how you could put a window in an already existing shed but i bet you could, hope that helps abit x

ooh, the snuggle safe things, i think you can freeze them too in summer to keep piggys cool, but you best check x

1. What useful items do you keep in your shed?
I have boxes and lots of them! three of them ontop of the hutch:
toys, food storage, first aid box and a hay box which keeps all my hay supplies in.

2. how do you keep it cool on hot days?

My OH, had cut out two sections of wood from the top of the shed on opposite sites of the shed walls to allow air to blow through and keep the temp cool. We cover these holes up in winter though. We have also placed the shed next to the garage which blocks off most of the sunlight during the day.
We also if someone is home leave the door open :)

3. how do you keep in warm in winter?

Loft insulation! We put loft insulation around the outside of the hutch, put three layers of blankets ontop and supplied plenty of hay and vetbed and made my own cosies.

I'd also suggest putting bubblewrap on the window as insulation.

4. how do you make it feel more homely for the piggies?

Lots of toys on the shed floor, hideys, tunnels and wooden chews.

5. If you have lighting installed - how and what have you used for this?

We use a solar panel (on the outside shed roof) which powers the light inside the shed, we got it from B+Q from £15.

We also have a torch just in case!

6. hmmmm forgotten now lol but if you have any other useful info i'd be very grateful :)

We have vinyl tiled flooring in our shed and hutches, makes cleaning far more easier and quicker. We also dont put any sawdust/shavings hay etc on the shed floor, so they just have the tiled floor to run around on :)

I'd suggest making or using mesh infront of the door so you can have the door open but the piggies still running around.

If you do have your piggies free ranging in the shed and you have hutches, put the hutch on bricks as they will poop underneath the hutch and its much easier to reach when the hutch is on bricks :)

1. What useful items do you keep in your shed? We keep loads of tools;forks, spades,lawnmower,soil...
2. how do you keep it cool on hot days? if it had windows you could open them
3. how do you keep in warm in winter? I used heat pads, and make sure there are lots of fleeces and cosies avalible
4. how do you make it feel more homely for the piggies? Add tunnels, chews, brighly coloured fleeces on the floor, cosy cups, bell balls, soft toys, old socks sometimes stuffed, hideouts, log bridges and paper bags
5. If you have lighting installed - how and what have you used for this? I'm not exactly sure but they are portable light pads and stick the the ceiling, walls and the floor

1) My most useful item I have is my dustpan and brush, and my kitchen roll! I'm always using it to clean up! And I keep some of the basics in there, incase I need them.

2) I sit with them with the door open, and have a small fan in there. I also wrap some frozen water bottles in towels, so they can lie on them, and put in a chinchilla tile.

3) I put in a heat pad, put a wooden piece by the door to make sure drafts can't get in and put in lots of warm/cuddly toys!

4) I just have exactly the same as I would if they were inside! Haha. But nice, cuddly places to sit is always good, and a change of toys regularily to keep them entertained.

5) Yes, it's a long story how I did it.. and I use it for if it's dark on winter nights, or if I need to run in in the night for something.

Hope this helped! :(|)

Isabella, Tallulah, Penelope & Lily.

Thanks for this thread, it's really useful as I am going to go all out on a free range shed for mine when I move house after Uni

My pigs are now in the house but when i had them in their shed (built by my OH) i did/had the following

1. What useful items do you keep in your shed?
Bedding, hay (stored in a duvet cover in a wheelie bin), readigrass, baby wipes, black bags, disinfectant, newspaper (in a tub), food (in bins with lockable lids, open sacks in a wheelie bin)

2. how do you keep it cool on hot days?
Meshed all windows & added insect netting to these & stable door. Put hand-wrung wet towels over hutch fronts & put frozen water bottles in socks into hutches (1 for each pig).

3. how do you keep in warm in winter?
All windows have shutters, hutches are insulated, put fleece blankets over their hideys & gave loads & loads of hay to bed in.

4. how do you make it feel more homely for the piggies?
Their hutches had everything in them they needed, mine didn't have use of the floor because the rabbits are free-range.

5. If you have lighting installed - how and what have you used for this?
Has a fluorescent light tube in it wired up via garage (shed is attached to garage).

6. hmmmm forgotten now lol but if you have any other useful info i'd be very grateful :)
I also had a calendar, notepad, pen, clock, dustpan & brush, nail clippers, scales, first aid kit, scissors, notice board, sweeping brush, metal dustbin.

1. What useful items do you keep in your shed? I keep all the shampoos, brushes, food, spare equipment, medicines, spare fleeces etc
2. how do you keep it cool on hot days? my brother is installing opening windows and a new changable mesh wire door (on a wooden frame).
3. how do you keep in warm in winter? my shed has been insulated and another inside pannel added
4. how do you make it feel more homely for the piggies? it's painted pink for the girls & blue for the boys:(|) they have loads of hidey houses, tunnels, toys etc
5. If you have lighting installed - how and what have you used for this? 3 poundland battery operated lights that are attatched to a light pulls.
6. hmmmm forgotten now lol but if you have any other useful info i'd be very grateful
I have no hutches in my shed, just 2 storey c&c grids, they're lined with puppy pads & fleeces I find my boys and girls have more room that way :)
