I have a fly infestation, mostly upstairs in my house, which is where my guinea pigs live and I sleep.

I've tried swatting the flies but there are two many.

I've got some fly spray but I know this can be highly dangerous, even for humans to breathe in.

So my plan was the bring the piggies downstairs for 24 hours while I spray, and let the spray do it's thing. I'm not going to spray in the pigs room, but just in the landing.

Will it be safe for my piggy boys to return to their room 24 hours after I've sprayed?

Hmm, I think the spray would need to be cleaned off the floor, furniture and walls. Permethrin is used in pet sprays and can be safe if formulated specifically for guinea pigs and used according to instructions. Fly paper is safer. A fan will help to discourage flies, even if not blowing on the piggy cage. Cleaning away poop and pee a few times a day can really help as well. It is wise to get rid of flies as they can cause big problems. Permethrin is not safe for cats, so take care with it.

What flies are they? If they're the little fruitflies that lay their eggs in plant pot soil, you can get the sticky things that can be pushed into the soil and they do a great job at catching the little flies. You do have to be patient though as the life cycle of the flies mean you need to keep going until numbers reduce. A fine gravel on the soil stops flies getting to the soil to lay eggs too.
If it's those horrid large flies, you can get an electric fly zapper. I wouldn't use fly sprays at all, they are toxic and the air still circulates around your home and I'd really worry about you or your piggies breathing it in as well as where the spray settles on carpets etc.
Do you know what's encouraging the flies into your home? Sometimes the large flies are attracted by dead mice or rats so be sure you don't have anything like that hidden away as it's really easy for them to get into our homes.
Can you keep the door to your piggies room closed so flies aren't in with them? Might be easier to swat a few that do get in rather than trying to swat loads.
I wish you well xx

I’d avoid the fly spray
The flypaper would be best or the plug in electrical zapper
Good luck

Have a look at this thread there are some ideas on it instead of using fly spray.
