Does anyone use fly screen on the inside of their hutches against the mesh?
We get plenty of flies by us, probably because we have cows at the bottom of the garden. Whilst I plan on having it installed on the shed door, I do wonder if anyone has ever done this.

I sprayed the hutch the day before with the Johnsons Hutch stuff for flies & mites etc, but having reached in and given Jack a little stroke I noticed a fly....I know it was only a solitary fly but nevertheless it got me thinking.
Plus we get loads of wasps & bees (oh yes bees) in the fullness of summer.
Am I being over protective?

I was thinking of getting something like that too, I have the same hutch spray plus the piggies also get sprayed with the Johnsons fly strike spray. But I don't think you are being too over protective we don't want an angry wasp in there.

I am a fan of fly screens - my boys are inside but we still get flies inside as we live next door to horse fields. I use 'Buzz' door fly screens and cut it to size and then tape to fasten it to the outside of the mesh doors - small staples might work on the outside too but I have not tried that. It needs the occasional bit of re-fixing and attention but works well. I just fasten the top edge so it is like a curtain that I can move out of the way if needed but see what works for you

Thanks both, that's answered the query for me then....that's the next DIY job on the list to do. My husband thinks I'm mad as a box of frogs!

You're not mad one of my friends piggies got Flystrike and it killed him. It is not a pleasant thing! We have to do as much as possible to keep our lil ones safe. X

Fly screens are only black netting. I get my netting from a fabric shop and the hook velco. Its exactly the same stuff but I a lot lot cheaper

Yep I was thinking where I might get it from...on the way to work I was thinking of ways to make it durable. Gosh I'm sad!:dri:
Well I'm afraid you're not alone if that's the case and I suspect my OH will think the same about me!

I hadn't thought about fly strike before and now I'm thinking hutch outside is going to need something, is there anything I can do for the cages indoors (we get a fair number of those large common noisy flies inside our house)? Would like to still be able to see and get at the poor gps!

In my old house we used to get a lot of fly's and spides . I I got netting and velco with the sticky back and stuck velco around windows. Cut netting to size. Job done, not more bugs. If you use black netting it can't be seen from outside house and you can see out of your windows. The dont use white or coloured. If gps are in a cage you could easily make a netting cover to go over cage. Just need to watch piggys done chew it. If you get it from a fabric shop it will be dirt cheep

Thanks. Think it'll have to be something over the cages though - most of our flies come in through the front door - put it this way: 5 humans live here and 4 of them don't seem to know how to shut a door....!

I absolutely hate flies in the house, they drive me mad so you are not alone :) I only open the windows when I am home *& am constantly checking there are no flies that get in, so the fly screens would be great for me too :)

We have fly mesh up at one of our windows which does seem to help but it is there it stop the damn pigeons coming in. Our block of flats has 2 resident pigeons that I think at one point have wandered into every single flat.
