Hi All, we are about to get our first pair of guinea pigs, and the hutch i've selected (not yet bought) is a 2-tier one, where the top layer has a sleeping area and a wire front to see in/out, and the bottom layer is a run. The problem is, the hutch will have to stand on concrete, and i'm not too happy at the thought of the piggies running about on cold concrete floor. If i put rubber matting down, then some straw, would that be ok for them? We've only got a small patch of lawn, so they will also have a moveable run to get some grass, but I'd like them to be able to exercise at will, rather than when we get home from work!

Straw isn't really recommended for guinea pigs, so if you are going to put some bedding down, hay would be much better. You could try Vetbed or fleece bedding or something on top of newspaper - it's safe for piggies and probably nicer for their feet than rubber matting. (Be careful about putting hay on top of it though, as it can be a pain to pick off when you have to clean the fleece/bedding!)

Good luck with your first guinea pigs!
