We have had our pigs now for 6 weeks and they are settling in (although still terrified of us and quite shy!)

They are in an outdoor 5ft Chartwell with toys although seem to spend most of their time in the sleeping area, hidden away. When it's dry we put them in a secure outdoor run and it's only then that they come to life. Odd as the same toys are in there too but for whatever reason they like the run.

I have a question about flooring as on wet days they cannot go on the grass but they do seem to like the run. What can I put under it? newspaper? Waterproof sheeting of some sort? Am a bit unsure what to use.

I wouldn't put newspaper down as that will just go all mushy and horrible. I have outdoor piggies and don't put them out when it's raining. I do put them on the patio in the run with an old duvet on the top of the run so that they don't get wet if it happens to rain while they are out there. Problem with that is the patio gets quite disgusting and I have to clean it off every night. At night when they are tucked up in the hutch I pop the old duvet back on top of the run to keep the patio underneath dry in case it rains at night.

I have also put another old duvet under the run like this

then all I have to do is shake off the duvet and wash it every couple of days. The other duvet is always on the top too but obviously I took it off so that I could take the photo.

My two like very few toys - the most popular is anything they can eat like a carrot cottage - but they don’t play as such.

if I’m going to put my two out when it’s been raining (they live in a shed and have free range of the shed so I don’t need to worry too much about letting them outside in anything other than nice weather) but if I do put them outside then I use an old plastic table cloth (the type you can buy on a roll and they will cut what you need from places like the Range) and the put either a fleece on top or just some hay (as long as it isn’t windy).

In the winter when my boys can't go outside, I'll pick up a couple of thin plastic tablecloths from the party store. I'll lay them down in my living room along with some blankets on top. The tablecloths make sure that pee won't soak through the blankets into my carpet. I suppose you could use them outside as well.

I’ve used shower curtains before, but never thought of a cheap plastic table cloth. Brilliant idea, thank you.

Bill and Ted have a weatherproof cover of their run which is great, they quite like the wet grass though, I put plenty of hay in their hay loft and wooden house to keep them cozy

I use this ball with veg/treats. Keeps mine entertained. They might use this in their hutch. Just an ideaimage.webp

I got a camping ground sheet for the floor covering, with the fleece etc. on top - wish I had thought of shower curtains!

My two don't play with anything they're 'supposed' to....
