Hi, can I use fairly soft towels as a base/bedding to use for my playpen? I've seen the fleece with an absorbent layer underneath but I'm trying to avoid using fabric. Would the towels be soft enough for the piggies feet? (they'll only be on it 1-2 hours every day) Would their toenails get caught? Anyway, after floor time each day, I'd spray and scrub the pee spots with a stain remover made for pets. It says it's safe for animals, but would that include guinea pigs? And then only when needed, I would wash the towels. How does this sound to you guys? Just don't want to do anything that would harm or hurt my pigs

P.S. I'm also thinking of sewing the towels together so it makes it easier to set up and take down. Is it likely that the guinea pigs would chew on the threads?

Hello,

I actually think your better off using fleece, because towels can fray and your right they could catch one of their nails in the loop of the towel, if you understand what I mean. I wouldn't be concerned about being on fleece, at the end of the day it's actually good for them to not always be on soft flooring because they do need to wear down their nails, and or create a little hardening on their pads. Too soft isn't ideal all the time.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe if I try it and watch them carefully I could see how it goes with using the towels. I'm really trying to avoid fleece because I don't want to have to wash it in my washing machine...... <--- [Any tips on that?] Also, does anyone know about using that animal stain-remover? If I'm scrubbing out the pee everyday, will this at all harm the guinea pigs? I'd really like any help I can get, as I'm getting them in a few days and will be using what I have at the time for the playpen.

It might be worth a go. I guess it depends on the shortness of the pile in the towel, but of course your version of towel, i might be different to what I'm thinking of.@)

Re the washing machine, best to use an old pillow case, put the dirties in there then chuck into the machine, don't use fabric conditioner though, that way any loose bits of poo and hay will be caught in that and not your machine.

You will still probably have to wash the towels anyway, because ideally you want the water to be hot enough to remove stains and it to be really clean, what with all the scent marking. I haven't used any stain remover before, I normally throw it the washer, the fleece that is. Some things work for some and not others, its down to both piggie preference and yours.

I used towels for my boy after he'd had an op and could no longer live on his hay (abscess :)>>>) the towels i used were very small pile so he never caught his nails on them, but yeah you do need to be super careful.
You could try washing them in a pillow slip and putting a rubber/elastic band on it so they don't escape :) then you'd just have to shake out any poopies that maynot have come off before washing.
I would NEVER use a product that has chemicals in it around the piggies. I use plain water and a few drops of white vinegar in a spray bottle to wash down their house. I know there's a few products on the market but have never had experience with them, i'm sure others will advise later for you :)

musta been posting at the same time :))
great minds think alike eh!

Thanks for all the help. I've never heard of using a pillow case for the washing. That is such a great idea! Now I'll probably use the fleece on top of the towels and stay away from the stain-remover. It's better safe than sorry :) Thanks again, I really appreciated the replies :)
