I've seen "floor time" referred to a few times on here. What exactly do people mean by it? Do you just let them wander around freely or confine them in one place? If you let them wander freely do they try to get into corners and hide?

When mine have floor time, they have the run of the living room except behind the coffee table because thats where there are wires.I put tubes and boxes in the room and they play in them and then flop out under the table for a snooze.

Floor time is time out of their cage, either in a run or room. Mine have their floor time in the upstairs passage way. I have the stairs blocked off so they are safe. Some time I let them run in the living room too, as we have a totally rodent friendly living room, no wire in there as we have no electrical items in there! I put towels & old sheets down along the sides by the wall, under the chinchilla & degus cages as these are the areas they lie down in & do their wee & poo so it saves the carpet! :D

Floor time is basically exercise outside of their cage/hutch. My piggies have a "leggy arena" when they have floor time. They have outside runs for lots of exercise. To help with human bonding my daughter & I sit opposite each other on the floor with our legs spread into a diamond shape and the piggies play in the arena. It's a good way of getting new piggies used to you and to being handled.

i let my two boys out in the living room, i put a few towels down and sit on the floor with them, they can have a wander were they want or come to me for a hug, plus there is room for them to go mad and popcorn! 98) :smitten:

My boys have floor time in the hall, I have laminate there so eay to clean, I don't think it's hyginec to poop in the living room as my daughters are always playing on the floor. I put papers down and block off stairs with baby gate.

This has really helped us bond with the boys especially Cuzzy as he never liked being held at first, floor time is so much fun! :)

Mine have the run of the lounge to play and hide in. I have 2 large rabbit tunnels down and put cardboard boxes etc. Their cages are on floor level so they pop back in to wee but do poop a lot under the couch ;D

Mine have a run outside in the garden and both get time in the hall.
John Anderson likes it in my livingroom, esp under my coffee table but we discovered that he was also enjoying have nibbles of our computer wires so he's been relagated to the hall again.

Can i ask a really silly question?! Our piggies go out in a run every day, if its raining we have an indoor pen for them. We pretty much leave them to play around. We sit and watch them a lot, and feed them titbits etc as we watch them. But what else should we be doing? We've only had them just over 3 weeks, and they seem to be pretty used to us already. They're happy piggying around while we watch them and talk to them...

Am I missing something...?

teabag sounds pretty much the same as us. If it's raining my two don't go out, but get time inside instead. At the moment cause Bob is in quarantine I have to split the time between them, but find that they both just end up sittinig on the floor somewhere so will pop them back in their respective cage/hutch.
John Anderson spent most of this afternoon in the hall, Bob has had an hour in the upstairs landing (not practical for us but only placec i can put him for now)
I spend some time with them talking to them, etc and other time just leave them be. I put out their toys for them to play with too

NO ELECTRIC IN YOUR LIVING ROOM ? 98) Alright ten anyway ;D floor time to me is taking them out of their cage and putting them outside in their runs. ;D

I just take the top of the cage and put my 2 piggies in, its a good way to introduce new piggies too. O0

I still have yet to let Baby Love on the floor, I take him on the couch, but we have alot of wires behind the TV and the kitchen is attached, any ideas how to staftey proof the living room?

You could build a 'play pen' from cardboard boxes and line them with towels or newspaper... or... if you have a baby play pen you could use that too :)

Duke thinks it's more fun if we're on the floor with him, he chatters to us and wanders around us, thru our feet and under your legs :smitten: :smitten: and then does explore and go over to the tiled area, hoping i'll put a snack there for him :)

My guineas are fine in their pen on the living room floor but the second theyre out of the pen the start wheeking 98)

Floor time to me is time out of the cage/hutch running around in the run outside or my hall way ;) lap time is cuddles on your knee :)
