Hi all

I am almost ready (and have Mrs approval) to have a couple of GPs;

They'll need to be kept in our balcony which is quite spacious... and I can bring them in for cage cleans, floor time etc!

My question is what flooring I should use, I dont want to use wood shavings... but any other suggestions would be appreciated?

The hutch will be tightly insulated and have a heatpad.

I'm in the process of creating a "things to buy list"so far i have:

Hutch! Primrose from Pets @ Home
Hutch Cover
Water Bottle
Heavy Food Bowl
Tubes / Toys
Indoor run
Hay
Food
Vegs etc
Heat Pad
Floor Bedding (Woodshavings, Carefresh etc)

Is there anything else I am missing?

i'll get it if i need to, otherwise i'll take them to the vets to get their nails chopped! eek.

any idea on the flooring?

you'll probably need at least 2 hutches..... i'll be surprised if, once you've got your piggies, you won't be able to resist a couple more.... that happened to me...now i've got 10 :(|):)):(|):))

I think that sounds like a good lot of stuff for now, you can always add to it later but I'm pretty sure you've covered the basics, in fact I think you have more than what I brought my first guineas home with! For the flooring, do you mean what to line the hutch with? I would use newspaper covered with carefresh or megazorb, but have a look at this post http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=46384&highlight=mucking+out as there are a few other very good options. I think Megazorb can only be purchased online. A lot of things are cheaper to buy online than from pet shops, including hay, so it would be worth looking into that for future use. Just get what you need for a few weeks from the pet shop for now, and research a little about what you think you would like to try for your guineas. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask on here if you are unsure about anything

Sounds great to me. You can always buy other stuff as you need it!

I personally use wood shavings supplied by my local farm shop. £6.50 for a large bale, which cleans out 11 hutches each week, and lasts me 2 weeks..imagine having just one to clean! LOL

I have no problems with them, and neither have my pigs.

I also use Vetbed for Oliver my skinny pig, which is good too. Expensive to buy but you won't need to replace it for a few months.

Megazorb can usually be bought from your local feed store. I pay between £6-£7.20 a bag (huge 85L sack). Often costs a lot more online due to shipping costs of such a heavy item.

just a tip. no matter what bedding you use, put newspaper under. a nice good layer of newspaper. then instead of having to scoop out all the dirty bedding you simply have to roll up the newspaper and place it in a plastic bag and you're taken it all out. you can look around for those free newspapers that people give out, usually just have rubbish in them anyway and use them, old ones you've finished with, ask friends or family to save newspaper for you. it will make the cleaning process A LOT easier, trust me! and it is very asorbant too! but remember to use more than newspaper, it should at least have hay or shavings or whatever choice of bedding on top. newspaper on its own is not a good idea. newspaper combined with a bedding of your choice is a GREAT idea.

now - i just need to look online for cheaper ****...!

Thats why i bought two whilst they were on offer! just waiting to hear back about the two resuces i hope to adopt :(|) its too exciting!
Hemel list sounds good to me i think i bought the same hutches as you, is it a two tier one (5ftx2ft?)
I also bought some of the fiddle sticks and a hay tube from P@H as other hidy spaces in the bottom part of the hutch saves them having to leg it up the ramp to the sleeping quarters if they get spooked -c
hubby is also going to make a 'banister rail' effect round the ramp entrance on the top floor so we have no accidents if they have a mad 5 mins ;)

grrrr

Well Mrs has doesn't want them now...luckily I never got round to purchasing... still showing a strop until she caves in... :0 lol

another thing is that the primose hutch from P@H wont fit... Id have to go for the cottage... any ideas? rolleyes

I could {:| order it and say that i orderd it several wheeks ago>?

Happy Easter everyone
