I have made my Guinea pigs a fleecy carpet for their hutch, it's a double layer with a gap like a pillow case so I can put something absorbent in the middle (otherwise they tend to burrow underneath the whole thing!) After shaking them off I have been washing them each day inside a pillowcase secured with an elastic band with a small amount of powder, I take it that's ok? Then I shake outside and line dry

So far we have been using a shoe box for a house but they have got through two in this first week as they have knocked it over and weed on it and then munched though the 'door'. Are the wooden houses quite durable? And should I stuff the house with hay every evening?

And finally, the girls seem to prefer to wee and poo at the far back of the hutch behind their house. it has a small ledge so it's not possible to put something over that area but it's quite difficult to clean. Any ideas?

Thank you

Hmm, just done a full clean for the first time and the (wooden) hutch is really quite damp at the back corners. I have cleaned with disinfectant but need to find someway to stop the wood getting wet! Is there a piggie safe varnish?

I often return to find plastic pigloos upturned and weed in !

I' m not sure if there's a pet safe varnish.

I use this stuff ...

Wilko Garden Colour Buttermilk 2.5L

..it'll protect the wood.

Is it possible to put a litter tray in the area they wee in most

Mine use a corner a lot and I have put a corner tray in there - filled with Aubiose bedding and topped with hay. They love hopping in and out of it

l dont use much powder and l now dont udualy wash higher that 40, but l use Virkon S tablets, they are a veternary grade sanertizing tablet and are good to pre wash my vet beds and washing there cages , and
the pig room floor , in fact it can be used all around the house

lf l were you l would use Green back Vet bed instead of fleeses , as far as l am concered , they are much less troble
and more higenic

You could use vinyl flooring to line the bottom and a few inches around the walls of your cage, much easier to keep clean and more hygienic. Wooden items for your cage are great for them to chew on but the down side is if they develop fungals or mites etc they're not too good for cleaning and should be binned. Plastic hideys are pretty good as they can be cleaned efficiently.

I usually use F10 for disinfecting my cages as it is the only disinfectant that kills everything and it is also what the vets use.

I know @gizzy has recommended using vet bed but when hay is stuck to it it is harder to brush off than fleece x
