Hi guys
have been thinking about swapping shavings for fleeces for a little while now. And just had a few questions:

1. How many layers of fleeces and does newspaper need to go under the towel?
2. Does it need to be 100% polyester or is 98% OK?
3. Does anyone know where to get cheap towels? I have a 2 leveled 60in x 24in hutch. [I dont mind if I need to have 2 towels for each level]

Here is a picture of the hutch so you can have a basic idea of the size:

I find one layer of fleece fine. I just put newspaper under my fleece but adding towels too is a good idea if the floor is wood.

I would have said that 98% polyester would be fine

No ideas on that one, sorry!

Many places that have cheap fleeces, also have have cheap bathroom and beach towels. Try supermarkets or places like Primark. My towels are from Ikea - less £1 per towel.

One layer of fleece is enough; but it needs to prewashed 2-3 times to remove any softener that seal the surface. Also make sure that you never overfill the washing machine, otherwise your fleece will come out absolutely stinking!

I'm very very new to this, so sorry if this is obvious to those experienced owners, but I posted a wanted add on freecyle when I was "investigating" piggies and was donated so many fleecy stuff free of charge. over 40 towels were donated to me. I haven't used them yet, but, if you have a freecycle it may be worth asking for old items that you can use (washing first obviously)

B&M bargains sell really large and cheap bath towels I got an extra large bath towel for £1.50 originally £2.50 (which is still fantastic value) but got mine fir £1.50 because it was the last one they also sell large fleece for £2.50 each :)

Does it not matter if they chew the fleece? My 2 just seem to chew anything I put down (even with things they're suppose to chew on offer!).

I've just towels in the past but normally just for convalescing etc.

Mine tend to 'graze' on their fleece but not really chew it up. It's not as satisfying for them as chewing wood or cardboard, for example.

I have read that if they tend to chew the fleece it does not hurt them. But mine does not!

I have also read that they like bright colored fleece. Make them happy! We have a bright one. As you can see in my profile pic. x)

I just love that Charlie sleep all sprawled out on the fleece. I can tell when I need ot change his cage as he will run and sleep in his pigloo. But with a reclently new clean cage he will lay all sprawled out and look soo happy and content. Just make us go "aww" every time he does it! LOLxoxo

i am havin a few problems with the best way to wash the fleece etc they make such a mess of it in one day and as they are in my room i dont want it smelling any advice on washing and keeping things clean :{

We put vinegar in the wash with the towels. Just recently we have started washing his blankets and fleece in hot water instead of cold. Seem to help..

I do have to clean his cage every day as the warmer days come he is tending to drink more water and gets smelly quickly.

Monty who has just swapped to fleece, is spending most of his time in his cozy so his cozy and fleece under it are getting very soggy quickly - creating a lot of washing and I'm at the moment changing fleeces/towels every 2 days, cozy once a day.

I have ordered a 'pet hair filter bag' from a local company I found from Google - hope it will end the issue of guinea hairs in the washing machine!

They are sold for horse/dog blankets etc so the chap I spoke to was amused it was for rabbit/guinea fleeces - said he had not heard of that but they should work fine. With VAT and P&P it was about £11.

Will post how I get on with it once it arrives - it's meant to collect hair/bits in then you just shake it outside after.

Won't add the link as not sure if I can as advertising but I found it via google. If anyone wants the link just PM me.

Hope it works as it is not really fair on everyone elses cloting getting guinea hairs on and me clogging up our old washing machine that does not need an excuse to break down normally!

I got my fleece fabric from a seller on Ebay ( Item number: 280719638207 ) it was 150cm wide, anti-pil and 3.99 a metre which I thought was pretty reasonable. Some patterns are more per metre but I was quite happy with bright orange circles - very cheerful! I bought four metres which gave me enough for two C & C cages twice over ( I doubled up so I've got clean fleece on wash day ) and a good bit of spare for piggie cushions and sofas.
The seller is: material_magic1
Hope that helps,
Andrea
