Hi,

We use sawdust for our Piggies, and I have wanted to use fleece for a while, as sawdust is a pain to clean.

My mum doesn't want fleece because she says it makes too much laundry for her to do, which I understand and respect.

I was just wondering, how many times would I have to change and wash their bedding a week?

Was thinking the same, do your GP's live inside or out ? we would like to use something else besides sawdust but wasnt sure what others use in ourdoor hutches ?

I just started using fleece outdoors a couple of weeks ago, and it's going fine, but not sure if it will get damp in winter . . . I'm washing in once a week, but every day (sometimes twice) I shake off the poops and sweep them up. At the end of the week, the fleece is pretty yucky looking! I had to switch to black fleece with paw prints on it, because it shows up the stains less. :)

But if they're in a cage all the time then it might need washing more, mine have a run on the concrete attached to the hutch, so they do some of their poops out there. My girls only poop outside the hutch, but the boys poo everywhere!

The piggies are loving it so far, they seem to find it very comfy.

And it's much easier to clean than sweeping out shavings/hay, and you can easily clean it everyday, in a couple of minutes, instead of leaving pigs in dirty bedding. :)

I've ordered some vet bed too for the sleeping area of the hutch too.

I have five indoor guineas and they live on vetbed with newspapers underneath. I spot clean with dust pan and brush twice a day and remove any wet newspaper in their toilet area. On the third day I remove the vetbed, sweep it off outside with a good stiff brush, then pop it in the washer inside an old duvet. So I guess I do two washes a week. If you used the fleece blankets you may be able to get more into your washer each time, cutting down on the number of washes I guess. Much less mess than sawdust, and cheaper in the long run I would say.

Awww, poor poco you must miss him alot :(

I use fleece and and towels, it depends on the size of your cage as to how many towels and fleece you'll use.

I have two levels so have a large towel and fleece on the bottom floor and as my top level is L shaped i use two towels and a large fleece cut into two strips- this makes half a load of washing.

If i add in extra stuff like cosies and the towels i use for cuddle time then this makes a full load.

I do a bedding change twice a week so you're looking at between half/full load of piggie washing twice a week.

Unless you have more then two sets of bedding- in which case you could do one was a week (Depending on amount of items to be washed) but then you'll have smelly piggie bedding left around for a couple of days.

Thanks everyone, you were all very helpful~

We are washing an old winter fleece for them, so we can put it in their cage above some newspapers today.

Thanks~

I find that i can leave the incopads a full week with no smell, my piggies are quite well behaved on the litter tray front so i only really need to wash the fleece once a week aswell but i wash it when i feel it needs it rather than on a set schedule
