Can anyone tell me a bit more about fleece in cages?

Does it smell?
Is it suitable?
Will my piggies be happy having this instead of wood shavings?

Thanks :)

I use fleece. I have towels and then two layers of fleece. Three times a day I remove poops and every three days I wash the fleeces and towels in the washing machine. I love fleece. It is nice and cosy for piggies. Shavings can cause them to sneeze and it gets everywhere!

Thanks.

Yea I agree shavings do get everywhere...and I think I would rather snuggle up to fleece that wood shavings haha

Thanks for the advice :)

You are welcome. Before you use it make sure you wash and dry it three times without fabric conditioner as it makes it waterproof. I get mine from Primark for three pounds.

I use fleece with newspaper under and cage liners :), I only find they start to smell when they are due to be washed, as above with care wash it a few times first :).
(I hate sawdust/wood shavings, it gets everywere rolleyes)

Fleece is fine if you have plenty of time on your hands, I work 8 hours plus travelling I poop scoop when I get in from work so only once a day. Washing and drying takes hours , personally I think megazorb or finacard are better for the hooman but my piggies get a treat now and again and get fleece for a week or two.

Chemicals in the manufacturing process leave a water resistant layer on fleece, this needs to be removed otherwise water will just sit on top of the fleece, once this layer is removed liquid will wick through leaving the fleece feeling dry and so your piggie will be dry.

I find washing once at 60 for an hour with cheapo non bio liquid without fabric conditioner removes this layer fine and liquid wicks through my fleeces.

I use fleece with layers of towels and puppy training pads underneath, poop sweep at least 3 times a day but more like 5 tbh and clean out cage every 3 days and it still stinks! I dunno what i am doing wrong lol

well I just want to add, i am currently trying to switch to fleece, after washing my fleece 3 times as advised, i lined my cage with towel and top layer fleece, it wasnt working properly and it stank within 24 hrs I bought more fleece tried again changing washing powder, and changed the fleece over, no sooner had Poppy wee'd it just sat there, and she was ringing wet and stunk of urine, I pulled everything out bathed Poppy and am back on shavings at the moment, I have since washed all the fleece's about another 5 times and now by checking with water the water is starting to go through. So before you line your cage I would recommend checking it with a cup of water to see if it is going through, if it just sits on the top it still has some water barriers in place and will not work, also check the towels you use, I found that the big fluffy towels seem to asorb water fast, a short threaded towel the water just sat there. I am still inteading to give it another go, but am going to make sure the water is running through the fleece really well before using in my cage again, I dont want my Poppy sitting in her urine again.

I've just very recently changed to fleece and I love it! I use newspaper, then towel, then fleece, changing the fleece every morning (shake it all outside), and sweep up in the evening. It washes on a 30 cycle and dries really fast, and i have several pieces so I'm not washing every day. I change the towels and newspaper when I think it needs it, and this is the only time the washing becomes a bit of an issue. Got my daughter to time me on a full clean out and it was much quicker than with the woodshavings!

I do not have any problems with fleece. I ,and they love the fleece. It does need more frequent cleaning and changing than woodshavings though.

It will start to smell a bit if not changed and cleaned often enough...so would your bed covers if they were being used as a toilet...

:))

I think Pink Jumper wasn't using fleece in early march when she started the thread;)

She was just updating on her experience with fleece. Handy for anyone else thinking of trying it!
