What's this about using fleece for piggy bedding? What do I have to do with it? What are the advantages and disadvantages? (Sorry 1st time piggy owner only had them a week!)

this link is super helpful :)

I use to use woodshavings and then read this and swap to fleece, the only thing is fleece is definitely easier to change but i find it smells worse faster.
And my biggest dislike about fleece, is when hay gets on it, its so hard to get it off before sticking into the washing machine.

Fleece is very popular and much cheaper in the long run as you can use it over and over again, people usually line the cage with newpaper then some old towels then fleece ontop, its very comfy and cosy for the pigs to sleep and lay on, 2 -3 times a day you'll need to "poop scoop" sweep up their poo's then do a full change every 2 - 3 days, If you shake the fleece and towels really well to get any loose poo's and hay pff you can stick them in the washing machine in a 60deg wash, then use them over and over again.

When you first get your fleece you'll need to wash 3 or 4 times WITH NO SOFTNER to get rid of the coating on the new ones, then their wee will wick through to the towels and newspaper.

Thanks sounds like a lot of messing about! Think I will stick to woodshavings! Thanks anyway :)

It is to begin with but when your in a routine it works out well and saves alot of money on woodhsvaings etc, plus you dont get the risk of respiratory infections from the woodhavings.

I use Megazorb, so much more absorbent than shavings and doesn't smell, I tried fleece but it was alot of messing about with getting hay off it. I get a sack for about £6 and that lasts me 3 or 4 months so alot more cost effective, easier to Hoover up from the floor and doesn't stick to your clothes or socks so doesn't get carried through the house :)

Megazorb?

I beleive this fleece is cheap argument to be a little flawed , certainly in my case it works out almost the same if not more expensive than bedding!

Finacard needs changing once per week and I use 10 litres at a cost of 59p. Poop corners spot cleaned daily taking 2 minutes - negative I have to have a parcel delivered and i work weekdays!

Megazorb needs changing once per week and I use 9.5 litres at a cost of £1.23
Poop corners cleaned daily taking 2 minutes - negative so light and fluffy it ends up trained around the house

Shavings would need changing 2x weekly I think due to smell and their lack of absorbency so these would be more expensive than fleece in teh quantities I use

Fleece I bought two at £5 each, then two towels at £5 each, plus newspaper/puppy pads then needing changing every other day . Based on one wash load a week of piggy stuff and using a tumble dryer this would work out at 60-70p per week (detergent and electricity costs). But everyday it took me 30 minutes to scoop poops , pull of hay etc etc. Using one wash a week would be whether I changed once weekly or 2 weekly the cost would be the same

Love fleece bedding!

Personally I only completely change the fleece and towel in my boys cage every 5-6 days (certainly not every 2-3 days!). If you use a stiff brush I find the hay/dried food comes off ok and I love the way I can just carry the whole fleece blanket to the brown bin and just shake it in - or carry it up the garden and have a good old shake up there!

I bought maybe six fleece blankets when I got started on sale at Dunelm Mill (really cute - one is pale blue with white spots on and one is grey with white spots on) - they were £3.95 each. I cut some of them up and use them as lap blankets or to put inside little hidey boxes and some for the litter tray where the hay goes. Newspaper I save or get from a friend and towels are just old towels/tea towels that have holes in or have gone a funny coour in the wash!

Sometimes I even just shake out the fleece and turn it over so I can't see any bits of annoying hay/tomato stains etc - and it lasts a few more days. I love the way the fleece layer on top stays totally dry (even if it does pong a bit) - and just the towel underneath that gets wet. My boys tend to only pee in the dark hidey places anyway - so I put an extra layer of towel under that bit. I only 'poop-scoop' once a day and my cage looks fine. I clean out the litter/hay tray and hidey boxes once a day too but I **** only spend 10 mins a day on cage maintenance. I was spending a small fortune on absorbent cage litter so this way is loads cheaper for me!

I don't mind seeing pieces of hay stuck on the fleece anyway -it is meant to be a house for small animals not something I would want to sleep on. Ha ha. My boys seem to love it and it smells nicer than it did when I was using woodshavings and hay everywhere.

I stuff all the wet towels and fleece in a bin bag and wash them maybe twice a week. Fleece dries so quickly - it probably only takes a couple of hours and I only washed mine once before I used them all and they were fine.

Hope this helps xx

I used to have piggies as a child in an outdoor/shed hutch with hay and woodshavings and cleaning it out was horrible - the wee had sunk into the wood of the cage etc - this way the floor of my Trixie 150 hutch is only a bit damp in a couple of corners - the towel and fleece absorbs all of the wee. It's great - my husband thinks I am mad but I love it! x
