Hi,

I am new to the forum but fleece seems to be popular for indoor hutches. I have just bought an indoor hutch and have shavings down at the moment but fleece seems to be the best thing and less messy.

I am hopeless at sewing so If I were to cut down some fleece throws would I need to sew hems or just took the edges under?

How does the layering work with fleece? Would I put a layer of fleece and then a folded towel and then newspaper? or is this too much or too little.

How often should I change and wash the fleece. They aren't litter trained (yet) and I'm not sure they will ever be because they have different hutches depending on the weather etc. At the moment they will be inside for a few wks while one of them recovers from a broken front leg.

Any advice would be great,

Thanks

Lorna

You don't really need to sew the fleece, I've hemmed some and not others and can't tell the difference tbh. They don't really fray. I use a absorbent mattress topper under my fleece ( single fleece layer ) and puppy pads on top of that on just the one end of the cage where they tend to wee the most, that way the topper's not being constantly soaked. With regards changing the fleece, it does vary but if I poo sweep two of three times a day and they don't soak one particular spot too much then I could get away with the fleece lastingupto 5 days but sometimes it's a lot less which is why I have more than one set of fleeces. They're very easy to wash through quickly on a quick wash and a doddle to dry so I don't really worry if we have a wet and smelly week and I'm washing more often. You can always rinse them out in the bath tub with some non-bio if you don't want the washing machine on too often - there's no poo or hay ( just shake it off ) so all you're doing is rinsing the wee out.
Don't forget to pre-treat your fleece before using, you want the wee to soak straight through rather than sit on top so wash a few times with non-bio ( and NO softener ) first and don't use tumble sheets either if you're tumble drying.

I use mattress toppers with fleece, you don't need to sew but it is more convenient when they are sewn together, i dont use anything under my cage liner's

here's my latest

Thanks for the responses.

I think we will be trying the fleece out. I like the idea of the all-in-one but I'm not skilled enough. They look lovely though :-)

Hi
I use fleece with a towel underneath and newspapers under that. I sweep up the poos and change the hay every then take the lot up every 3 or 4 days. Don't wash the fleece with fabric softener as it won't wick the wee away.
I haven't sewn the layers together but I have sewn edges so it goes over the correx sides and tucks a little way underneath purely for a piggy called Matilda who has a thing about pulling it all up and dragging it into a ball in the middle of her house and hiding underneath it!
