HI

I have never heard of people using fleece for guinea pigs until joining this forum. I have had guniea pig for over 25 vyears and have always used sawdust and hay, never had a problem.

But you have got me interested.
Is it just vet bed and/or fleece blanket you use? Do they not chew it or choke on it and is it not always wet with pee?

I know you wash it, but my gunieas pee all over their cages.

Thanks,
Jules

I use fleece with inco pads underneath. I know some others use mattress toppers, towels, puppy pads etc underneath and maybe towels.

The pee seems to flow through the fleece quickly leaving it dry on top and the underneath layer soaks it up. Fleece needs washed before using and wash without fabric conditioner.

I put down towels and then two layers of fleece. It is brilliant. Nice and cosy for the piggies and no mess like shavings. Also my herd hardly sneeze now. I would really recommend it.

Same! I found it all very odd but now I'm a total convert!
I'm nearly 28 and have been keeping piggies since I was 3 and had always used shavings until i tried fleece about 2 months ago. I love it, it's so easy to change and keep clean etc. I lay down a thick newspaper, then one large bath towel or two hand towels (these are old ones i have set aside soley for use in their cages) and then i have a fleece large enough to double up and lay that down.

I have a hay rack to keep the hay contained and off the floor and they have cosy beds to sleep in & boxes/tunnels to play in etc.
I poop scoop once or twice a day and change the fleece and towels once every 4 days. The first time i put my piggies in on the fleece i've never seen so much popcorning! they find it snuggly and comfy, they often just sprawl out on it! It's so quick to do and of course it's saving me a few pounds too.
Oh, you'll need to wash the fleece first, without fabric softner so the pee wicks through, and continue to wash it without softner otherwise it makes the surface kinda waterproof and the pee sits on top :)

So much easier and cheaper than wood shavings. And less messy too. I used to use peusable nappies so this is familiar to me :))
